Synopsis Hydraulic Machinery and Cavitation by : Enrique Cabrera

Hydraulic machinery such as turbines and pumps is widely used around the world. Related topics concerning design, operation and maintenance are of relevant interest. In this context, cavitation is a phenomenon to be taken into account, and this was treated in the XVIII IAHR Symposium on Hydraulic Machinery and Cavitation which took place in Valencia, Spain, 16th-19th September, 1996 and which was hosted by the Polytechnic University of Valencia. The proceedings of the Symposium have been published in two volumes. In this first volume, the papers included cover the following topics: Hydraulic Turbines, Analysis and Design Hydraulic Pumps Hydraulic Elements, Dynamic Characterization and Hydraulic Behaviour Cavitation and Sand Erosion In the second volume, the papers included cover the following topics: Hydraulic Transients and Control Systems Related to Hydraulic Machinery and Plants Oscillatory and Vibration Problems in Hydraulic Machinery and Power Stations Experimental Investigations related to Hydraulic Machinery and its Applications Practical Applications of the Hydraulic Machinery Monitoring, Predictive Maintenance and Refurbishment The 119 papers presented at the Symposium, from research groups, consulting companies and manufacturers, constitute an important collection for investigators, engineers and technicians who are interested in updated information on hydraulic machinery. This book is intended to be a reference text comprising the latest innovations on this subject.

Synopsis Wave Processes in Classical and New Solids by : Pasquale Giovine

Wave propagation in solids has been widely studied and principal advances in this field have been achieved not only for the improvements of calculus methods, but also for the high progresses attained in the description of new types of materials. This book presents innovative and original research studies describing some enhancement in both directions. In particular, the first section is devoted to the propagation of waves in complex materials and related dispersion relations are deeply investigated. Instead the second section is dedicated to new applications for the study of wave processes in classical solids; the emphasis is posed on various simulation availabilities in the fields of seismology, damaging, geomaterials and multi-wave propagation. The audience includes students, engineers and advanced scientists with knowledge of wave propagation in solids.

Synopsis IUTAM Symposium on the Vibration Analysis of Structures with Uncertainties by : Alexander K. Belyaev

The Symposium was aimed at the theoretical and numerical problems involved in modelling the dynamic response of structures which have uncertain properties due to variability in the manufacturing and assembly process, with automotive and aerospace structures forming prime examples. It is well known that the difficulty in predicting the response statistics of such structures is immense, due to the complexity of the structure, the large number of variables which might be uncertain, and the inevitable lack of data regarding the statistical distribution of these variables. The Symposium participants presented the latest thinking in this very active research area, and novel techniques were presented covering the full frequency spectrum of low, mid, and high frequency vibration problems. It was demonstrated that for high frequency vibrations the response statistics can saturate and become independent of the detailed distribution of the uncertain system parameters. A number of presentations exploited this physical behaviour by using and extending methods originally developed in both phenomenological thermodynamics and in the fields of quantum mechanics and random matrix theory. For low frequency vibrations a number of presentations focussed on parametric uncertainty modelling (for example, probabilistic models, interval analysis, and fuzzy descriptions) and on methods of propagating this uncertainty through a large dynamic model in an effi cient way. At mid frequencies the problem is mixed, and various hybrid schemes were proposed. It is clear that a comprehensive solution to the problem of predicting the vibration response of uncertain structures across the whole frequency range requires expertise across a wide range of areas (including probabilistic and non-probabilistic methods, interval and info-gap analysis, statistical energy analysis, statistical thermodynamics, random wave approaches, and large scale computations) and this IUTAM symposium presented a unique opportunity to bring together outstanding international experts in these fields.

Synopsis Fluid-Structure Interactions by : Michael P. Paidoussis

The first of two books concentrating on the dynamics of slender bodies within or containing axial flow, Fluid-Structure Interaction, Volume 1 covers the fundamentals and mechanisms giving rise to flow-induced vibration, with a particular focus on the challenges associated with pipes conveying fluid. This volume has been thoroughly updated to reference the latest developments in the field, with a continued emphasis on the understanding of dynamical behaviour and analytical methods needed to provide long-term solutions and validate the latest computational methods and codes. In this edition, Chapter 7 from Volume 2 has also been moved to Volume 1, meaning that Volume 1 now mainly treats the dynamics of systems subjected to internal flow, whereas in Volume 2 the axial flow is in most cases external to the flow or annular. - Provides an in-depth review of an extensive range of fluid-structure interaction topics, with detailed real-world examples and thorough referencing throughout for additional detail - Organized by structure and problem type, allowing you to dip into the sections that are relevant to the particular problem you are facing, with numerous appendices containing the equations relevant to specific problems - Supports development of long-term solutions by focusing on the fundamentals and mechanisms needed to understand underlying causes and operating conditions under which apparent solutions might not prove effective
