Synopsis Mississippi State Cases, Vol. 1 of 2 by : Joshua S. Morris

Excerpt from Mississippi State Cases, Vol. 1 of 2: Being Criminal Cases Decided in the High Court of Errors and Appeals, and in the Supreme Court of the State of Mississippi; From the June Term 1818 to the First Monday in January 1872 Br an Act of the Mississippi hgislature, approved February 2-1, 1854, the Attorney General was authorized to report anew the decisions in criminal cases, contained in these twenty-five volumes of Mississippi Reports. When the compiler of the pres ent volumes succeeded to the office of Attorney General, in the winter of 1869 the work so authorized had not yet ap peared. He was informed that Mr. Attorney General Glenn had, in his lifetime, commenced it but the result of his labors had been lost then, and it was not known, even by the most intimate friends of that distinguished gentleman, to what extent it had progressed. In the meantime the number of the volumes of the current series of the decisions of the appellate court, from which the criminal cases for the compilation were to be taken, had increased from twenty-five to forty-three. Recognizing the increased demand for the work, the legislature passed An Act to authorize a compilation of criminal laws, approved July 17, 1870, the pro visions of which are in all respects similar to the first, except that the cases to be reported anew are the cases contained in all Che volumes of Mississippi Reports; or such and so many of said decisions, as the Attorney General shall deem of sufficient importance, etc. It is under the authority of the act last mentioned that these two volumes of Mississippi State Cases are presented to the profession. The two volumes contain in' a condensed and con venient form for reference and use, all the criminal cases of value ever reported, from the first. Term of the Supreme Court, in June, 1818, to the October term, 1871. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis Mississippi State Cases, Vol. 2 of 2 by : Joshua S. Morris

Excerpt from Mississippi State Cases, Vol. 2 of 2: Being Criminal Cases Decided in the High Court of Errors and Appeals, and in the Supreme Court, of the State of Mississippi, From the June Term 1818 to the First Monday in January 1872, Inclusive In the winter of 1828-9 he abandoned the life of a schoolmaster, entered the law 0600 Of the celebrated Robert J. Walker at Natchez, and devoted all his energies to the study Of law. In the June follow ing, alone, on horseback, he made his way across the country about one himdred miles to Monticello, where the Supreme Court of the State was then in session, and there applied for and Obtained an examination as to his qualifications and a license to practic'e law. Returning to Natchez, he was taken into partnership in practice with General Felix Huston, at that time one Of the most distinguished larvae of the State. And it was then immediaw discovered that the few years he had devoted to legal study had been years Of noble and splendid achievement. Twenty-one yeam afterward, when the grave had just closed over his honored remains, his friend and kindred spirit, Joseph J. Brennan, himself a lofty and dazzling genius, alluding to the advent of young Prentiss as an advocate, said A weak and debilitated boy, with gentle lisp, and supported by a sustaining cane, was soon seen stealing away the technical hearts of stem judges, or weaving seductive tales in the honest ears of sworn jurymen. Re sistless as the penetrating breeze, his juvenile eloquence searched every avenue Of thought and feeling. The classic page and the varied mass Of modern literature were conveniently stored away in the massive caverns Of his broad and fertile intellect. A close train of didactic reasoning on the most abstruse legal topics, was lit up with the pyrotechnic fires Of fancy. The most ordinary incidents Of life, the merest common-places, were caught on the wings Of his imagina tion, and blended and efl'ectively commingled in his illustrative ora tory with the boldest and most gorgeous metaphors.
