Synopsis Space Mining and Manufacturing by : Davide Sivolella

This book produces convincing evidence that exploiting the potential of space could help solve many environmental and social issues affecting our planet, such as pollution, overcrowding, resource depletion and conflicts, economic inequality, social unrest, economic instability and unemployment. It also touches on the legal problems that will be encountered with the implementation of the new technologies and new laws that will need to be enacted and new organizations that will need to be formed to deal with these changes. This proposition for a space economy is not science fiction, but well within the remit of current or under development technologies. Numerous technologies are described and put together to form a coherent and feasible road map that, if implemented, could lead humankind towards a brighter future.

Synopsis The World of Mining by : Richard Woldendorp

In this truly unique celebration of mining, breathtaking aerial photographs by award-winning photographers Jim Wark and Richard Woldendorp accompany ground-level pictures of mines, mine-side oddities, and mine communities. Informed but breezy narratives by mining experts John Trudinger and Karlheinz Spitz identify and explain the images. The World of Mining shows that mining and associated activities can be impressive, attractive, and even spectacular. The book illustrates most if not all aspects of mining and mineral processing, in all its varieties, and from different environments throughout the world. It illustrates the colourful history of mining and its importance to the development of civilisation as we know it. It depicts the wide range of activities in modern mining, from exploration to mine closure, as well as traditional mining by skilled practitioners, using methods adapted to local conditions. A visual feast for anyone interested, with and without a background in the earth sciences or photography. Recommended as well as a primary and secondary school information source on the subject. Not illustrated. 1910 edition. Excerpt: ...and F. E. Burr form the directorate of the new Mexican company. In the financial arrangements for the Santa Gertrudis deal Camp Bird has provided 150,000 for working capital. R. J. Frecheville, one of three engineers who examined the Santa Gertrudis for the London concern, and whose report is stated to be the most conservative, places a value of 924,000 on the ore reserves now in sight. He estimates that there should be a profit of 20 pesos a ton on 160,000 tons of ore a year, or a total annual profit of 3,200,000 pesos. The Santa Gertrudis properties include the Santa Gertrudis, Potosi, Amistad and Concordia, Alianza, El Refugio, Virginia, Dulce Nombre, Santa Gertrude Nueva, Area and Copernico mines and the Santa Gertrudis and Guadalupe reduction works. The mineral holdings amount to over 600 acres, and the mines are" developed by 5 shafts and 16 tunnels. The capital of the present Mexican company is made up of 60,000 shares of a par value of 100 pesos each, and the money received from Camp Bird will be distributed among the stockholders at the rate of 150 pesos a share. It is said that the Camp Bird representatives are not impressed with the location of the new Santa Gertrudis cyanide plant, and that it may not be placed in commission. In any event, it is stated, another cyanide plant will be built at a point not far from the San Francisco shaft. When Camp Bird, Ltd., directed its attention to the Pachuca district, it was with a view to the purchase of the La Blanca mines, and not the Santa Gertrudis. However, Mr. Frecheville and other Camp Bird representatives were not satisfied with the financial details of the La Blanca deal, and abandoned negotiations. In the meantime John Hays Hammond and associates had arranged an...
