Synopsis Mindfulness and Acceptance in Sport by : Kristoffer Henriksen

Mindfulness- and acceptance-based approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Mindfulness Acceptance Commitment (MAC) are gaining momentum with sport psychology practitioners who work to support elite athletes. These acceptance-based, or third wave, cognitive behavioral approaches in sport psychology highlight that thought suppression and control techniques can trigger a metacognitive scanning process, and that excessive cognitive activity and task-irrelevant focus (self-focused attention such as trying to change thoughts) disrupts performance. Using this perspective, the aim of sport psychology interventions is not to help the athletes engage in the futile task of managing and controlling internal life. Rather, it suggests that sport psychology practitioners should work to increase athletes’ willingness to accept negative thoughts and emotions in pursuit of valued ends. Key aspects of such interventions include: teaching athletes to open up and accept, teaching athletes to mindfully engage in the present moment, and helping athletes formulate the values and engage in committed actions towards these values. The goal of Mindfulness and Acceptance in Sport: How to Help Athletes Perform and Thrive under Pressure then is to provide students, researchers, practitioners, and coaches of sport psychology with practical guidance for implementing mindfulness and acceptance approaches in their work with athletes. This book brings together highly experienced practitioners and shares their working methods, exercises, and cases to inspire the sport psychology profession.

Synopsis The Athlete's Mindfulness and Mindset by : Fred Lange

Your proven plan for developing the athletic mindset and mindfulness you need to succeed.Designed for athletes of all sports, this one-of-a-kind Athlete's Mindfulness and Mindset, A Training Workbook, is a proven program to be a more aware and successful athlete. This training will impact their mindfulness and mindset with a set of practices that have been tested and worked. This workbook takes the view that the mindset is a process, not a thing or entity. It's not some outside experience, hidden in the brain or immaterial realm. As we have seen in brain science, the mind is experiential and subject to constant change. Mindfulness engages process, experience, and awareness in self-agency of individual growth and in sport and team growth in pursuing mindful intentions and attributes. The author surveyed athletes who have worked with him and asked them about how their work together impacted their performance. What worked is in this book along with a daily journal specifically set up for athletes. This is what the athletes said about this work:"Not to have to fight against myself during a game.""To gain insight into my talents and limitations.""Not to feel irritated by my opponent or even my teammates.""Not to feel pressure from anyone watching my game.""To feel acceptance and self-confidence instead of frustration.""Not to be negatively influenced by the outcomes-score, my stats, other measures.""To transform my fear of failure, especially losing, into faith in myself and in my team.""To focus and concentrate more in training sessions and in games.""To play freely during a game situation instead of tensing up by fear and mistakes.""To leave my many other accountabilities and concerns off the field."

Synopsis Promoting Wellness for College Athletes Through Mindfulness Meditation by : Lisa R. Braatz

The practice of mindfulness meditation may be beneficial for college athlete’s mental health and wellness. College athletes are in a period of significant personal growth and experience high amounts of stress related to athletic performance, academics, and peer relationships. Integrating mindfulness meditation for college athletes has been linked to improving relaxation, concentration, and performance while decreasing fatigue and negative emotions related to fear or anxiety. This scholarly project explores the implementation of four mindfulness meditation sessions on perceptions of stress, mental focus, athletic performance, and presence in female college track and field athletes. The participants were attending an urban college in Minnesota and were between the age of 18 and 22 years old. A holistic approach from the healing framework of nursing theorist, Jean Watson, was embraced throughout the project. Pre and post evaluations were given to guide the developmental evaluation. There was a high level of interest in learning mindfulness meditation and all the college athletes reported stress related to academics. Although the mean level of stress increased from the first to last session, secondary to outside influences, most college athletes would recommend the program. This scholarly project followed the Essentials of Doctorate Education for Advanced Nursing Practice and the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Competencies. The scholarly project may be applied to nurse practitioner practice by improving the emotional wellness and healthy habits of colleges athletes’ responses to stressful situation while contributing to a decrease in medication usage and health care costs.
