Synopsis Ships by : David Ross
From the dawn of civilization, man has held a fascination with the sea and over the centuries has built myriad ships and sailing craft for an equally diverse range of purposes. Ships: Visual Encyclopedia provides a fascinating at-a-glance guide to more than 1200 of the most important ships from the earliest times to the present day. From the Viking longship through the 16th century galleon to the super carriers and nuclear submarines of the 21st century, Ships: Visual Encyclopedia includes every conceivable type of ship in which man has gone to sea. As well as warships from every century, this book also examines those vessels that have explored the globe, conducted trade, and afforded great adventure, luxury and entertainment. From the smallest coastal traders up to the vast oil tankers of today, from the graceful clippers of the 19th century to the modern passenger liners, Ships: Visual Encyclopedia is the comprehensive guide to all the world's ships, both military and civilian. Each ship is illustrated with a profile illustration, accompanied by brief details and specifications, and vessels are arranged chronologically and by use to allow easy comparison. Timelines of design and development are also provided on many pages where appropriate, giving a sense of the history of each type of ship. With 1200 outstanding color illustrations, Ships: Visual Encyclopedia is an essential reference book for maritime and ship enthusiasts.

Synopsis US Patrol Torpedo Boats by : Gordon L. Rottman
ALSO AVAILABLE AS AN E-BOOK. Motor torpedo boat development began in the early 1900s, and the vessels first saw service during World War I. However, it was not until the late 1930s that the US Navy commenced the development of the Patrol Torpedo or PT boat. The PT boat was designed for attacking larger warships with torpedoes using its 'stealth' ability, high-speed and small size to launch and survive these attacks – although they were employed in a wide variety of other missions, including rescuing General MacArthur and his entourage from the Philippines. This book examines the design and development of these unique craft, very few of which survive today, and goes on to examine their role and combat deployment in World War II.

Synopsis Abandoned World War II Aircraft, Tanks & Warships by : Chris McNab
Illustrated with more than 150 unique photographs, Abandoned World War II Weapons allows the history buff and general reader to explore the detritus of this great, destructive conflict in every part of the world. The scattered remains of a German bomber on Spitsbergen Island; Sherman tanks waterlogged off Omaha Beach; Japanese merchant ships sunk off the coast of New Guinea. More than 75 years after the end of World War II, the conflict's legacy can still be seen from the Arctic wastes to the Solomon Islands of the South Pacific. The six years of World War II produced a greater number and variety of weapons than any other conflict before or since. This included more than 5 million tanks, armored fighting vehicles, and other self-propelled weapons; 8 million artillery guns; almost a million military aircraft; more than 50,000 ships and submarines; as well as many millions of rifles, machine guns, and handguns. Today, in every corner of the world, the remnants of this epic conflict can still be seen. Long-buried partisan weapons caches in the Belorussian forest; sand-covered trucks in the Sahara desert; crashed American bombers and Japanese anti-aircraft guns in the jungles of New Guinea; tank wrecks on old military training grounds; thousands of unexploded bombs in the depths of the world's seas and oceans; or the hundreds of aircraft and 30 Japanese ships destroyed in Truk Lagoon, the biggest graveyard of ships in the world and today a popular dive site.
