Synopsis The World of Applied Electromagnetics by : Akhlesh Lakhtakia
This book commemorates four decades of research by Professor Magdy F. Iskander (Life Fellow IEEE) on materials and devices for the radiation, propagation, scattering, and applications of electromagnetic waves, chiefly in the MHz-THz frequency range as well on electromagnetics education. This synopsis of applied electromagnetics, stemming from the life and times of just one person, is meant to inspire junior researchers and reinvigorate mid-level researchers in the electromagnetics community. The authors of this book are internationally known researchers, including 14 IEEE fellows, who highlight interesting research and new directions in theoretical, experimental, and applied electromagnetics.

Synopsis Advances in Microwave and Radio Frequency Processing by : M. Willert-Porada
Prometheus brought fire to mankind Arthur R. von Hippel “Dielectrics and Waves”, 1954 Our contribution? There are only few areas of research and development of a comparable scientific and technological extension as microwave and high frequency processing. “Pr- essing” means not only application of radiation of 300 MHz to 300 GHz f- quency to synthesis, heating or ionisation of matter but also generation, transm- sion and detection of microwave and radio frequency radiation. Microwave and high frequency sources positioned in the orbit are the foun- tion of modern satellite telecommunication systems, gyrotron tubes being pr- ently developed in different countries all over the world will most probably be the major devices to open up a new era of energy supply to mankind be means of - sion plasma. Although initiated by military purposes during the Second World War (RADAR, Radio Detection and Ranging), microwave and high frequency utilisation has spread over almost every important aspect of normal day life since than, from individual mobile phones and kitchen microwave ovens to industrial food processing, production of composites as sustainable building materials, green chemistry, medical applications and finally infrastructure installations like GPS and Galileo, to name only few examples. These different areas of microwave and high frequency radiation application can not be unified within one group of scientists and technologists. There are s- eral distinguished communities active e.g., in the area of telecommunication s- tems, strong microwaves for fusion plasma or plasma based materials processing.

Synopsis Ceramic Materials and Components for Engines by : Jürgen G. Heinrich
Several ceramic parts have already proven their suitability for serial application in automobile engines in very impressive ways, especially in Japan, the USA and in Germany. However, there is still a lack of economical quality assurance concepts. Recently, a new generation of ceramic components, for the use in energy, transportation and environment systems, has been developed. The efforts are more and more system oriented in this field. The only possibility to manage this complex issue in the future will be interdisciplinary cooperation. Chemists, physicists, material scientists, process engineers, mechanical engineers and engine manufacturers will have to cooperate in a more intensive way than ever before. The R&D activities are still concentrating on gas turbines and reciprocating engines, but also on brakes, bearings, fuel cells, batteries, filters, membranes, sensors and actuators as well as on shaping and cutting tools for low expense machining of ceramic components. This book summarizes the scientific papers of the 7th International Symposium "Ceramic Materials and Components for Engines". Some of the most fascinating new applications of ceramic meterials in energy, transportation and environment systems are presented. The proceedings shall lead to new ideas for interdisciplinary activities in the future.

Synopsis Rapid Thermal and Integrated Processing V: Volume 429 by : J. C. Gelpey
This book is the latest in a continuing series on rapid thermal processing and related topics. It embraces a diversity of research, development and manufacturing activities that require rapid thermal and integrated processing techniques which are recognized by their acronyms, such as rapid thermal annealing (RTA), rapid thermal processing (RTP), rapid thermal chemical vapor deposition (RTCVP), rapid thermal oxidation (RTO), and others. This fifth anniversary volume reports notable advances in the use of rapid thermal techniques in processing science and technology, and for process control in industrial fabrication facilities. It is organized around progress obtained through: evaluation methodology; equipment and process modelling; temperature control; defects and diffusion associated with annealing; metallizations such as silicidation; novel processing of sol-gel and magnetic films; dielectric growth and deposition; and silicon or silicon-germanium film deposition.

Synopsis Energy Efficient Microwave Systems by : Lambert E. Feher
Many individual technological solutions for microwave applications in industries have been developed without a clear pattern for a key strategy to replace conventional industrial technologies. In this work, the author shows how a modular microwave system line for very homogenous microwave fields is originated. "Energy Efficient Microwave Technologies" is designed for engineers and scientists from industry and academic research. The number of applications of this new technology is enormous: In this book, applications in the avionic field are shown as well as new methods in microwave materials processing for composite materials including new quantum aspects on microwave heating.
