Synopsis Sustainable Sushi by : Casson Trenor
Sustainable Sushi answers the question on the minds of millions who enjoy eating fish: how can we indulge the desire to dine well while keeping our health and the health of the oceans in mind? With painstaking research found in no other book on the market to date, this pocket-size guide profiles dozens of the most common fish and shellfish one might encounter at a sushi bar, details where and how they are caught, whether or not they are safe, and how they figure in the current fishery crisis. Written by a fishery and sustainability expert who was himself netted long ago by the allure of Japanese cuisine, Sustainable Sushi offers simple, clear explanations of such topics as mercury and PCB levels, overfishing, and species extinction. Attractively designed and featuring quick facts, maps, photos, and illustrations, the book was written for both the novice and the seasoned sushi fan. In a storm of seafood shortages and frightening statistics, Sustainable Sushi shows readers how to enjoy the sushi bar without guilt. Synopsis ZENTROPOLIS by : David Conway
MUZAN-EIGA MESSIAH. MUTANT SEX TRIBE. In the aftermath of a global cataclysm the totalitarian city-state of Zentropolis rises from the ashes of Japan. Marukido Sada, a freelance assassin and last surviving exponent of a mysterious neugenics program known as Project Equinox, embarks on a hazardous mission that draws her deep into the heart of a hostile urban dystopia populated by fanatical religious cults, vicious crime tribes and subversive groups obsessed with the erotic possibilities of biological mutation. Her quest culminates with the revelation of a genocidal plot led by the charismatic doyenne of the ultraviolent muzan-eiga craze inspired by malevolent alien entities determined to exterminate all human life. ZENTROPOLIS combines science fiction, horror and the occult with vivid imagery derived from Japanese manga comic books, anime and their muzan-e predecessors -- an apocalyptic rollercoaster ride in which the cosmic potentialities of Eastern and Western fantasy traditions collide spectacularly.

Synopsis Gothic Science Fiction 1980-2010 by : Sara Wasson
Gothic fiction's focus on the irrational and supernatural would seem to conflict with science fiction's rational foundations. However, as this novel collection demonstrates, the two categories often intersect in rich and revealing ways. Analyzing a range of works—including literature, film, graphic novels, and trading card games—from the past three decades through the lens of this hybrid genre, this volume examines their engagement with the era's dramatic changes in communication technology, medical science, and personal and global politics.

Synopsis Shonen Knifes Happy Hour by : Brooke McCorkle Okazaki
Shonen Knife-an all-female punk trio from Osaka, Japan-cultivated a global fan base that has included the likes of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain and Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore. Their 1998 album Happy Hour, filled with tunes about delicacies ranging from sushi to banana chips, encapsulates the band's charming fusion of cuteness with punk rock cool. Tracing histories of food and josei rock in Japan, McCorkle Okazaki outlines the ways Shonen Knife has, over the last forty years, consistently used seemingly straightforward songs about food to comment on gender stereotypes in popular culture.

Synopsis Full Metal Apache by : Takayuki Tatsumi
Takayuki Tatsumi is one of Japan’s leading cultural critics, renowned for his work on American literature and culture. With his encyclopedic knowledge and fan’s love of both Japanese and American art and literature, he is perhaps uniquely well situated to offer this study of the dynamic crosscurrents between the avant-gardes and pop cultures of Japan and the United States. In Full Metal Apache, Tatsumi looks at the work of artists from both sides of the Pacific: fiction writers and poets, folklorists and filmmakers, anime artists, playwrights, musicians, manga creators, and performance artists. Tatsumi shows how, over the past twenty years or so, writers and artists have openly and exuberantly appropriated materials drawn from East and West, from sources both high and low, challenging and unraveling the stereotypical images Japan and America have of one another. Full Metal Apache introduces English-language readers to a vast array of Japanese writers and performers and considers their work in relation to the output of William Gibson, Thomas Pynchon, H. G. Wells, Jack London, J. G. Ballard, and other Westerners. Tatsumi moves from the poetics of metafiction to the complex career of Madame Butterfly stories and from the role of the Anglo-American Lafcadio Hearn in promoting Japanese folklore within Japan during the nineteenth century to the Japanese monster Godzilla as an embodiment of both Japanese and Western ideas about the Other. Along the way, Tatsumi develops original arguments about the self-fashioning of “Japanoids” in the globalist age, the philosophy of “creative masochism” inherent within postwar Japanese culture, and the psychology of “Mikadophilia” indispensable for the construction of a cyborg identity. Tatsumi’s exploration of the interplay between Japanese and American cultural productions is as electric, ebullient, and provocative as the texts and performances he analyzes.

Synopsis Kinky Kabuki by : David Conway
"THE GREATEST PERFORMANCE IS THE ONE THAT ACHIEVES MADNESS..." Tokyo. A serial killer known as the Doll Maker is stalking the streets of Kabuki-cho, preying on the prostitutes that work in the city's notorious red light district. Obsessed with obscene fantasies and terrifying visions of an apocalyptic holocaust, the killer is a divinely inspired psychopath whose crimes incorporate elements of the occult, Buddhist doctrine and kabuki theatre. Takeshi Harada, a disgraced former police officer, is hired by a powerful yakuza crime boss to track down the elusive killer. Embroiled in a cycle of sex, violence and murder, the investigation leads Harada through the neon netherworld of the Tokyo vice trade -- its love hotels, image clubs and pink salons -- culminating in a life-and-death confrontation with the Doll Maker...and a final chilling act of bloody, symbolic justice.
