Synopsis Metagenomics and Its Applications in Agriculture, Biomedicine and Environmental Studies by : Robert W. Li
Metagenomics is the study of microbial communities sampled directly from their natural environment, without prior culturing. DNA sequencing (or alternatively, an assay of functional properties) is applied to the culture-independent analyses of complex and diverse ("meta") populations of microbes. The rapid growth of metagenomics entails an expanded focus on microbes in a wide range of basic and applied research fields, ranging from microbiology to agriculture, biomedicine to bioenergy, and from veterinary to clinical medicine. This book is an insightful and inclusive study on metagenomics and its applications.

Synopsis The New Science of Metagenomics by : National Research Council
Although we can't usually see them, microbes are essential for every part of human life-indeed all life on Earth. The emerging field of metagenomics offers a new way of exploring the microbial world that will transform modern microbiology and lead to practical applications in medicine, agriculture, alternative energy, environmental remediation, and many others areas. Metagenomics allows researchers to look at the genomes of all of the microbes in an environment at once, providing a "meta" view of the whole microbial community and the complex interactions within it. It's a quantum leap beyond traditional research techniques that rely on studying-one at a time-the few microbes that can be grown in the laboratory. At the request of the National Science Foundation, five Institutes of the National Institutes of Health, and the Department of Energy, the National Research Council organized a committee to address the current state of metagenomics and identify obstacles current researchers are facing in order to determine how to best support the field and encourage its success. The New Science of Metagenomics recommends the establishment of a "Global Metagenomics Initiative" comprising a small number of large-scale metagenomics projects as well as many medium- and small-scale projects to advance the technology and develop the standard practices needed to advance the field. The report also addresses database needs, methodological challenges, and the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in supporting this new field.

Synopsis The Pathogenic Yersiniae – Advances in the Understanding of Physiology and Virulence, Volume II by : Matthew S Francis
Pathogenic Yersinia consist of the prominent human pathogens Y. pestis, Y. enterocolitica, and Y. pseudotuberculosis, the fish pathogen Y. ruckeri, as well as a number of insect pathogens. Facilitated by the ease of in vitro culturing, genetic tractability, and availability of relevant infection models, studies of pathogenic Yersinia have revealed a great deal about physiological processes at the molecular level that contribute to pathogen adaptation to the ever changing environments both inside and outside of the host. Comprehensive genome sequencing analyses has further benefitted understanding of this bacterial pathogen evolution. Critically, many of these detailed molecular studies also identified potential targets for the design and development of anti-bacterial therapeutic drugs that could help to fight the ever-increasing problem of resistance to conventional antibiotics. New developments in several of these areas are highlighted in this edition of the Research Topic “The Pathogenic Yersiniae – Advances in the Understanding of Physiology and Virulence, Second Edition”.

Synopsis Probiotics in Agroecosystem by : Vivek Kumar
This book focuses on food security in sustainable agriculture and nutrient management. The study of plant probiotic microbes’ synergism using existing techniques has greatly improved our grasp of the structure and functioning of the plant microbiome. However, the function of plant probiotic microbes and their relation to plants’ health in the context of food security, soil nutrient management, human and plant health are largely unexplored. Compared to human probiotics, diverse types and millions of microbiota inhabit plants, forming multifaceted and complicated ecological societies that stimulate plant growth and health through their combined metabolic activities. From the perspective of sustainable cropping systems, observing plant probiotics can provide insights on how to stimulate and maintain plant productivity, along with host stress tolerance and recycling of soil nutrients. This book combines reviews and original research articles to highlight the latest advances in plant probiotics, their specificity, diversity, function, as well as plant microbiome management to improve plant growth and productivity, nutrient management and human health.
