During the last term of his services as auditor he purchased a third interest in the Exchange bank of Anderson, and on retiring from office in 1883 entered actively upon the duties of cashier of that in-stitution. In 1892 the bank was reorganized and converted into a national bank under the title of "The National Exchange Bank," and he was unanimously elected cashier, which po-sition he has held up to the present time--a period of sixteen years. In 1884 he was chosen chairman of the county Democratic central committee, and under his leadership his party achieved a signal victory for Grover Cleveland and the state and county tickets in the campaign of that year. No chairman in the history of Madison county politics has given better satisfaction to his party assOciates than he during the time he served in that capacity. He brought to the position business methods that were not only gratifying to the party but highly successful as to results. In 1891 he was elected to the city council as a Democrat from the Second ward, overcoming a large adverse majority. During his term he took an active part in securing for Anderson an electric light and sewerage system and many miles of brick-paved streets. During his term as councihnan he left nothing undone that in his judgment would be of benefit to the people or contribute to the importance of the city. When natural gas was discovered he was one of the leading members of the board of trade, and contributed most liberally of his time and money in locating industries and building up the city, which at that time was a small and unimportant place. This biographical dictionary documents the Union army colonels who commanded regiments from Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. Entries are arranged first by state and then by regiment, and provide a biographical sketch of each colonel focusing on his Civil War service. Many of the colonels covered herein never rose above that rank, failing to win promotion to brigadier general or brevet brigadier general, and have therefore received very little scholarly attention prior to this work.
