Synopsis Membrane Filtration by : Greg Foley
Focusing on the application of membranes in an engineering context, this hands-on computational guide makes previously challenging problems routine. It formulates problems as systems of equations solved with MATLAB, encouraging active learning through worked examples and end-of-chapter problems. The detailed treatments of dead-end filtration include novel approaches to constant rate filtration and filtration with a centrifugal pump. The discussion of crossflow microfiltration includes the use of kinetic and force balance models. Comprehensive coverage of ultrafiltration and diafiltration processes employs both limiting flux and osmotic pressure models. The effect of fluid viscosity on the mass transfer coefficient is explored in detail, the effects of incomplete rejection on the design and analysis of ultrafiltration and diafiltration are analysed, and quantitative treatments of reverse osmosis and nanofiltration process analysis and design are explored. Includes a chapter dedicated to the modelling of membrane fouling.

Synopsis Scaling and Particulate Fouling in Membrane Filtration Systems by : S.F. Boerlage
Reliable methods to predict membrane scaling and fouling are important tools in the control of these phenomena. This dissertation focuses on the development and application of methods to predict and prevent barium sulphate scaling and particulate fouling in membrane filtration systems.

Synopsis Coagulation Pretreatment for Membrane Filtration by : Kerry J. Howe
This research report evaluates the fouling and flux decline performance of membranes after the source water is pretreated with coagulation, and identifies the conditions under which coagulation can improve membrane performance as well as the mechanisms that cause natural waters to foul membranes. Conducted at the University of Illinois, the experiments involved collecting raw water from lakes and rivers, coagulating the water in the laboratory, characterizing the physical and chemical composition of the water before and after coagulation, measuring flux decline as the water was filtered through MF and UF membranes, and examining the fouled membranes with scanning electron microscopy. Synopsis Patent Landscape Report on Membrane Filtration and UV Water Treatment by : World Intellectual Property Organization
Various water treatment methods are required and in use to make water safe and clean for drinking and irrigation purposes. The present landscape report focuses on a selection of water treatment technologies, namely UV disinfection and micro-, ultra- and nanofiltration. The report identifies patents that claim inventions related to these water treatment technologies. It also looks at patents on inventions that form part of desalination (pre- or post- desalination) treatment in particular.
