Synopsis Location Filming in the Alabama Hills by : Charles Michael Morfin
Forged from glaciers and sacred to Native Americans, the mountains, boulders, and rocks of the Alabama Hills mirror landscapes found all over the world. A scenic three-hour drive from the Hollywood sign, this location would prove to serve as the place to make movies. Early Hollywood studios sent location scouts to the area after hearing stories shared by travelers, and the rest is movie history. Over 500 films have completed shooting here, including silents, A movies, B Westerns, serials, sci-fi, film noir, television shows, and commercials. Tom Mix, Errol Flynn, John Wayne, William Boyd, Clayton Moore, Lucille Ball, Roy Rogers, Natalie Wood, Humphrey Bogart, Steve McQueen, Russell Crowe, Jamie Foxx, and many more have all scrambled amongst the terrain in the Alabama Hills.

Synopsis Arches of the Alabama Hills by : Orlyn Fordham
The Alabama Hills are found just to the west of the small town of Lone Pine, California. Most people would agree that they exhibit an extraordinary beauty with unique rock formations, stunning skylines, and the backdrop of the majestic High Sierras. It is no wonder that the film industry has repeatedly chosen this location for so many movies. However, hidden within the rocks, there is another often overlooked natural treasure, the arches of the Alabama Hills. There are reportedly over 300 of these geologic structures in the area. This guidebook provides a means to locate 72 of the more accessible ones, as well as 23 other features, by providing GPS coordinates, descriptions, color photos, and maps that can be readily used in the field. The arches can be found using just the maps but a GPS device will greatly facilitate the endeavor. The color photos and descriptions also aid in identifying the structures. The book is organized to simplify its' use. The Alabama Hills are broken down into nine areas that are covered separately; each with its' own map, feature descriptions, and color photos. An index map and map key help in navigating the book. Information on the history of the area, geology, camping, suggested itineraries, and road conditions is also included.

This guidebook documents over 1500 locations where 1,106 movies and 48 television series have been filmed. Arranged by state and then alphabetically by movie title, each entry includes the year of release, the two main stars, a plot line and a description of the location. Filming sites located in Los Angeles are excluded. All sites are accessible to the public. The indexes make it possible to quickly locate a favorite star, favorite movie or favorite location.

Synopsis The Old West in Fact and Film by : Jeremy Agnew
For many years, movie audiences have carried on a love affair with the American West, believing Westerns are escapist entertainment of the best kind, harkening back to the days of the frontier. This work compares the reality of the Old West to its portrayal in movies, taking an historical approach to its consideration of the cowboys, Indians, gunmen, lawmen and others who populated the Old West in real life and on the silver screen. Starting with the Westerns of the early 1900s, it follows the evolution in look, style, and content as the films matured from short vignettes of good-versus-bad into modern plots.

Synopsis Encyclopedia of American Film Serials by : Geoff Mayer
From their heyday in the 1910s to their lingering demise in the 1950s, American film serials delivered excitement in weekly installments for millions of moviegoers, despite minuscule budgets, nearly impossible shooting schedules and the disdain of critics. Early heroines like Pearl White, Helen Holmes and Ruth Roland broke gender barriers and ruled the screen. Through both world wars, such serials as Spy Smasher and Batman were vehicles for propaganda. Smash hits like Flash Gordon and The Lone Ranger demonstrated the enduring mass appeal of the genre. Providing insight into early 20th century American culture, this book analyzes four decades of productions from Pathe, Universal, Mascot and Columbia, and all 66 Republic serials.

Synopsis The Mirage Factory by : Gary Krist
From bestselling author Gary Krist, the story of the metropolis that never should have been and the visionaries who dreamed it into reality Little more than a century ago, the southern coast of California—bone-dry, harbor-less, isolated by deserts and mountain ranges—seemed destined to remain scrappy farmland. Then, as if overnight, one of the world’s iconic cities emerged. At the heart of Los Angeles’ meteoric rise were three flawed visionaries: William Mulholland, an immigrant ditch-digger turned self-taught engineer, designed the massive aqueduct that would make urban life here possible. D.W. Griffith, who transformed the motion picture from a vaudeville-house novelty into a cornerstone of American culture, gave L.A. its signature industry. And Aimee Semple McPherson, a charismatic evangelist who founded a religion, cemented the city’s identity as a center for spiritual exploration. All were masters of their craft, but also illusionists, of a kind. The images they conjured up—of a blossoming city in the desert, of a factory of celluloid dreamworks, of a community of seekers finding personal salvation under the California sun—were like mirages liable to evaporate on closer inspection. All three would pay a steep price to realize these dreams, in a crescendo of hubris, scandal, and catastrophic failure of design that threatened to topple each of their personal empires. Yet when the dust settled, the mirage that was LA remained. Spanning the years from 1900 to 1930, The Mirage Factory is the enthralling tale of an improbable city and the people who willed it into existence by pushing the limits of human engineering and imagination.
