The ultra-wideband (UWB) radio frequency local positioning system is a new technology currently being developed to meet application requirements in multi-path environments. Many problems, including accuracy and certainty of estimated local postions in the presence of indirect path echoes, remain to be solved. In this dissertation, we focus on solving the multi-path echo problem using system analysis and logical inference approaches. We present novel techniques for detecting illusive indirect path echoes (false measurements) with methods such as single location algorithms and two-location algorithms with and without movement distance measurement. Fuzzy logic inference is used to simplify false-measurement detection and improve detection efficiency. In support of the findings, we also present the closed-form solutions to Time of Arrival (TOA) and Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) estimations of local positions, analysis of positioning precision with Cramer-Rao Bound (CRB) theory, and unscented Kalman filter (UKF) technology application for the TOA/TDOA systems.
