Cyprus ticks all the boxes. Sun. Sea. Cheap food and drink. Friendly, smiling people. How would you like to live there? Is this island heaven too good to be true? Surely there can be no darker side? Is there no lingering resentment from the colonial period and the bitter and vicious guerrilla war which ended it? What happens when Vic and his wife Gay come into contact with the real Cyprus, away from the garish, overdeveloped tourist resorts? They quickly find people even more friendly and generous than in the towns, although less likely to speak English. But they also discover terrible cruelty to animals; winter weather worse than tourists are led to believe; snakes, dangerous driving and earthquakes; hunters, armed to the teeth, excited and trigger happy; institutionalised hatred between Greek and Turkish Cypriots; racism and sexual exploitation of women tricked into coming to Cyprus from abroad. Is paradise lost?

After eleven years of observing the Cypriot people, (of which I am one), I have written this book as a humorous, very much 'tongue in cheek' guide on Cyprus living. It is not meant to offend in any way, but what I have written is absolutely true. Once you learn to go with the flow Cyprus is a paradise. Please read with the humour it was intentionally written in.

Unease has marked relations between modern travel writers and the people of Cyprus. This edited volume of interdisciplinary essays considers the aspects of nation, identity, and collective experience in the notoriously divided island of Cyprus. The contributors examine the role of international politics particularly the involvement of Greece and Turkey and examine the changing relationship between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities since 1955. This edited book explores diverse contestations and transformations of sovereignty around the world. Sovereignty plays a central role in modern political thought and practice, but it also remains fundamentally contested. Depending on the context and perspective, it seems either omnipresent or elusive, liberating or oppressive, fading or resilient. Indeed, if in recent decades sovereignty has been expected to wane, today it is back on the agenda; not as the solid bedrock of modern – international – politics, which it never was, but as variations on a concept and institution that are ever contested and, as a result, constantly transforming. The post-war decades of the 1950s to the 1970s saw a mass migration from Cyprus to the UK. More recent years, however, have witnessed a 'return' to Cyprus of the British-born children of Cypriot migrants in the UK. Drawing on multi-site fieldwork, and adopting a life narrative approach, this book offers a refreshing and contemporary account of the motives, experiences and life views of these second-generation British Cypriots, as they choose to build their lives in their parents' birth country: a Cyprus that has been dramatically altered by globalisation, mass tourism and immigration since the first generation of immigrants left for British shores. Unlike their parents, who moved from Cyprus to the UK mainly out of economic necessity, this new generation of migrants tends to view their relocation to Cyprus as a lifestyle choice. And while the first generation of Cypriot migrants in the UK generally worked and socialised within the bounds of the Cypriot community, the British-born 'return' migrants in Cyprus embrace a more international lifestyle, beyond primordial ethnic or national boundaries -- observations which challenge the hypothesis that second-generation return migration is based on an essential longing to go back to one's 'roots'. The author examines the complexities and ambivalences involved when exploring ideas of 'identity', 'return', 'home' and 'belonging' in the ancestral homeland -- demonstrating how boundaries of such notions are blurred, eroded and re-established by a new generation of migrants, reflecting their time, experiences, choices and ideologies. The book is essential reading for all those involved in Migration Studies and Cultural Anthropology.

This book explores the different perspectives and historical moments of nationalism in Cyprus. It does this by looking at nationalism as a form of identity, as a form of ideology, and as a form of politics. The fifteen contributors to this book are scholars of different scientific backgrounds and present Cypriot nationalisms from an interdisciplinary framework, including approaches such as history, political science, psychology, and gender studies. The chapters take a historical approach to nationalism and argue that the world of nations, ethnic identity, and national ideology are neither eternal, nor ahistorical nor primordial, but are rather socially constructed and function within particular historical and social contexts. As a land that was, and still is, marked by opposed nationalisms – that is, Greek and Turkish – Cyprus constitutes a fertile ground for examining the history, the dynamics, and the dialectics of nationalism.
