Synopsis Lives in Context by : Ardra L. Cole
The reflexive turn in qualitative research has transformed the process of doing life history research. No longer are research subjects examined through the lens of the all-knowing but supposedly invisible researcher. As Ardra Cole and Gary Knowles point out in this fresh introduction to conducting life history research, the process is now one of mutuality, empathy, sensitivity and caring. The authors carry the novice researcher through the steps of conducting life history research-from conceptualizing the project to the various means of presenting results-with an eye toward understanding the complex relationship between participant and researcher and how that shapes the project. In addition to examples from their own research, Cole and Knowles bring in the work of a dozen novice researchers who explain the challenges they faced in developing their own life history projects in a wide variety of settings. Well written, interesting, and pedagogically sound, Lives in Context is the ideal text for teaching life history research to students and an important reference for the bookshelf of all qualitative researchers.

Synopsis Privacy in Context by : Helen Nissenbaum
Privacy is one of the most urgent issues associated with information technology and digital media. This book claims that what people really care about when they complain and protest that privacy has been violated is not the act of sharing information itself—most people understand that this is crucial to social life —but the inappropriate, improper sharing of information. Arguing that privacy concerns should not be limited solely to concern about control over personal information, Helen Nissenbaum counters that information ought to be distributed and protected according to norms governing distinct social contexts—whether it be workplace, health care, schools, or among family and friends. She warns that basic distinctions between public and private, informing many current privacy policies, in fact obscure more than they clarify. In truth, contemporary information systems should alarm us only when they function without regard for social norms and values, and thereby weaken the fabric of social life.

Synopsis The Life Course in Context by : Kyong Hee Chee
"The Life Course in Context introduces undergraduate and graduate students to the main themes and concepts of the life course perspective. It shows how these concepts are applied to the analysis of life course events and provides insight into the importance of considering cultural and historical context when examining the life course. The studies in the collection have been grouped into four sections. Section one introduces the life course perspective as a dynamic theoretical approach and illustrates how it can be applied to studying the multiple connections between neighborhoods and individuals' health. Section two incorporates a multicultural perspective to shed light on the early years of the life course. In section three students gain a deeper understanding of family and employment patterns and expectations during adulthood, and in Section four the studies explore aging and dying as they are viewed within a cultural context. The Life Course in Context is well suited to courses that address social issues related to life course transitions. It is also a useful supplement to gerontology courses that examine aging from a life course perspective. Kyong Hee Chee holds a Ph.D in sociology from Iowa State University. She is an associate professor of sociology at Texas State University, where she participated in the creation of the university's new master's of science program in dementia and aging studies, which is the first of its kind in the United States. Her research interests include aging and the life course and community development. Her work has been published in The Gerontologist, the International Journal of Sociology of the Family, and Sociological Spectrum. In 2008 the Gerontological Society of America awarded her its Civic Engagement in an Older America Project Senior Scholar Award."

Synopsis Martin Luther in Context by : David M. Whitford
Martin Luther remains a popular, oft-quoted, referenced, lauded historical figure. He is often seen as the fulcrum upon which the medieval turned into the modern, the last great medieval or the first great modern; or, he is the Protestant hero, the virulent anti-Semite; the destroyer of Catholic decadence, or the betrayer of the peasant cause. An important but contested figure, he was all of these things. Understanding Luther's context helps us to comprehend how a single man could be so many seemingly contradictory things simultaneously. Martin Luther in Context explores the world around Luther in order to make the man and the Reformation movement more understandable. Written by an international team of leading scholars, it includes over forty short, accessible essays, all specially commissioned for this volume, which reconstruct the life and world of Martin Luther. The volume also contextualizes the scholarship and reception of Luther in the popular mind.
