Synopsis Lithuanian Lullaby by : Gordon Mott

Lithuanian Lullaby follows the lives of six people as they manage the unprecedented world events in the decade between 1987 and 1997. With his country collapsing, a Soviet conscript in Afghanistan devotes his life to undermining the very country he is meant to serve. A Hungarian teenager cuts through a border fence in search of a better life; only to find herself indebted and robbed in London. In his perennial search for adventure and romance, an American discovers that language is no barrier to true love. An unorthodox union leaves two English parents struggling to raise their love child in Yorkshire. Each are about to share a peculiar connection to the tiny Baltic nation of Lithuania; a 'new' country emerging from an elongated sleep. The years of loneliness and isolation are over; the world is changing - and so will they.

Synopsis Past and Present Lithuanian Polyphonic Sutartinės Songs by : Daiva Račiūnaitė-Vyčinienė

Sutartinės, the especially ancient form of, often sacred, Lithuanian music, is enjoying a renaissance, mostly in Lithuania’s cities. Since UNESCO recognized these unique dissonant sounds originating from Lithuania’s Aukštaitija ‘Uplands’ ethnographic region as part of our Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2010, in-depth studies have flourished. This book presents the latest analogies discovered in distant examples of the genesis and ethnogenesis of foreign folk music examples, not only in neighboring lands but as far away as the Ainu subculture of Japan. It presents the latest findings and analyses of the hymns once said to be conveyed by laumės, mythical beings later demoted to witches during this music’s demise. This study supplements perceptions from Lithuanian and foreign ethno-musicologists with data from ethnology, archaeology, linguistics and other sciences and areas of scholarship, and thereby encourages even more studies in this field.

Synopsis Irena Veisaitė by : Yves Plasseraud

Irena Veisaitė is held in deep esteem throughout her country. This volume is an attempt to relate the difficult journey of her remarkable life against the backdrop of the complex history of Lithuania and its Litvaks (Lithuanian Jews). After being rescued by Christian Lithuanian families and having survived the Holocaust Irena Veisaitė devoted herself to study and creative work. She was a memorable lecturer, respected theatre critic, associate film director, and also founder and chairman of the Open Society Fund (Soros Foundation) which made an invaluable contribution to the process of democratisation in Lithuania. Irena Veisaitė made it her life’s work to speak up for dialogue and mutual understanding and believes that even in the most difficult circumstances it is possible to preserve one’s humanity. Having lived through some of the major atrocities of the twentieth century, her insistence on the need for tolerance has inspired many.
