Synopsis Liquid Light by : G. William Barnard
The Santo Daime is a syncretic religion that arose in the Amazon region of Brazil in the middle of the twentieth century and now has churches throughout the world. Its spiritual practice is based around the sacramental use of ayahuasca, a psychedelic brew consumed only within regular ceremonies. In Liquid Light, G. William Barnard—an initiate of the religion and a scholar of religious studies—considers the religious practice and transformative inner experiences of the Santo Daime community. Immersing readers in his own journeys into nonordinary states of consciousness, Barnard provides a vivid as well as introspective depiction of the dramatic ritual and visionary worlds that a practitioner of this tradition encounters. He combines striking first-person accounts of the ritual life of the Santo Daime with accessible examinations of the psychological and philosophical significance of mystical states and mediumship. Bridging insider and outsider perspectives on religious experience, Barnard demonstrates how the Santo Daime offers its practitioners a transformative and profoundly illuminating spiritual path. Liquid Light also reflects on the broader implications of psychedelics, arguing that entheogenic religions can shed light on a wide range of key philosophical questions concerning consciousness, selfhood, and reality.

Synopsis Joe DiMaggio Moves Like Liquid Light by : Loren Broaddus
A collection of poetry and quotes about baseball—and about so much more. The diamond is the backdrop for Loren Broaddus’s exploration of nostalgia, family, race, jazz, and the winding hallways of history. Joe DiMaggio is sometimes domestic, sometimes political—microscopic here, aerial there. While Broaddus’s poems may start at home plate, he sends them flying in all directions: sometimes into left field, sometimes out of the park entirely.

Synopsis Polarized Light in Liquid Crystals and Polymers by : Toralf Scharf
Polarized Light in Liquid Crystals and Polymers deals with the linear optics of birefringent materials, such as liquid crystals and polymers, and surveys light propagation in such media with special attention to applications. It is unique in treating light propagation in micro- and nanostructured birefringent optical elements, such as lenses and gratings composed of birefringent materials, as well as the spatial varying anisotropic structures often found in miniaturized liquid crystal devices.

Synopsis Liquid Light of Sex by : Barbara Hand Clow
A nationally known astrologer explores the connection between spiritual emergencies at age 30, 40, and 50 and key astrological passages of Saturn, Uranus, and Chiron. • Provides techniques for directing the kundalini energy released during planetary passages for optimal personal and psychic development. • Includes charts for birth years starting in 1930 so that readers can determine the timing of their planetary passages. • By Barbara Hand Clow, author of the bestselling Pleiadian Agenda (60,000 copies sold). Kundalini--the energy of eros that lies at the base of the spine--can be overwhelming once activated. Times of activation coincide with the key astrological passages of Saturn, Uranus, and Chiron in one's birth chart and are often experienced as periods of spiritual emergency, confusion, and imbalance. In Liquid Light of Sex, Barbara Hand Clow opens up new dimensions for understanding what occurs during these key life passages, which most of us experience three times in our lives. In the author's words, "we form at age 30, we transform at age 40, and we transmute at age 50." Focusing on the transformation at age 40--the time of imbalance and spiritual confusion often referred to as the "midlife crisis"--she explores how kundalini energy, the liquid light of sex, can be creatively channeled by unblocking the chakras. Offering effective methods for achieving physical, emotional, and spiritual growth during this important life passage, Liquid Light of Sex presents a roadmap for using celestial cycles to navigate positively and productively in times of great life change.

Synopsis California Slim by : Andrew J. Bernstein
There are literary reminiscences that reek of self-congratulation over the authors’ proximity to famous movers and shakers. Andy Bernstein’s California Slim aspires to far more than that—and achieves it. Andy was there, at the onset of the post-’50s revolution that, as a beat poet once put it, roared as it ripped the threadbare fabric of an age. Andy was no distant, casual observer during the tumultuous ’60s and ’70s; he was at the heart of the maelstrom, and writes about it with candor, humor, and originality. The story begins, for God’s sake, with Andy and his then unknown banjo teacher, a young Jerry Garcia, fingerpicking in a back room at Dana Morgan’s Music Studio in Palo Alto in 1962. A skinny six-foot-seven-inch Jewish kid (later known as “California Slim”), Andy divided his time between the usual adolescent interests and music, for which he would go on to provide a capital M by promoting and staging concerts throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. His Palo Alto nightclub, Homer’s Warehouse, across the street from the Stanford University campus, brought revolutionary musicians (among them, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee) to young sensibilities hungry for new driving rhythms and thought-provoking lyrics. The early chapters of this book set the stage for Andy’s eventual hooking-up with Willie Nelson and his Family—which felt, Andy said, “like reading a really good book that I couldn’t put down.” That feeling led directly, if gradually, to California Slim. And you, dear reader, won’t be able to put it down, either. —Tony Compagno

Synopsis Liquid Modernity by : Zygmunt Bauman
In this new book, Bauman examines how we have moved away from a 'heavy' and 'solid', hardware-focused modernity to a 'light' and 'liquid', software-based modernity. This passage, he argues, has brought profound change to all aspects of the human condition. The new remoteness and un-reachability of global systemic structure coupled with the unstructured and under-defined, fluid state of the immediate setting of life-politics and human togetherness, call for the rethinking of the concepts and cognitive frames used to narrate human individual experience and their joint history. This book is dedicated to this task. Bauman selects five of the basic concepts which have served to make sense of shared human life - emancipation, individuality, time/space, work and community - and traces their successive incarnations and changes of meaning. Liquid Modernity concludes the analysis undertaken in Bauman's two previous books Globalization: The Human Consequences and In Search of Politics. Together these volumes form a brilliant analysis of the changing conditions of social and political life by one of the most original thinkers writing today.
