Synopsis Life and Principles of Abraham Lincoln (Classic Reprint) by : Schuyler Colfax

Excerpt from Life and Principles of Abraham Lincoln Over two centuries and a half have passed away since the ruler of any great Nation of the world has fallen by the murderous attack of an assassin; and for the first time in our history there is blood on the Presidential chair of our Republic. Death is almost always saddening. The passing away of some dear friend from our earthly sight for ever, fills the heart with sorrow. When it strikes down one who fills honorably a position of influence and power, as in the case of our two Presidents who died of disease in the White House, the sincerest grief is felt throughout the land. But when this affliction is aggravated by death coming through the hand of a murderer, it is not strange that the wave of we sweeps gloomily over a nation, which sits down to mourn in sackcloth, its pulses of business stilled, feeling in every individual heart as if there was one dead at our own hearth-stones. Synopsis Abraham Lincoln by : James Baldwin

Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: A True Life It must not be thought that when our nation began its life it was rich and great as it now is. It was small and weak. Its possessions did not reach from ocean to ocean, as they do now, but only from the Atlantic coast to the Mississippi River. There were but thirteen states, and they were thinly settled. Nearly all the people lived in that part of the country which is east of the Alleghany Mountains, and the different sections had but little to do with one another. The largest and richest of the states was Virginia, which claimed the land westward as far as to the Mississippi. Synopsis Abraham Lincoln by : John G. Nicolay

Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: A History It is not, therefore, with any thought of materially adding to his already accomplished renown that we have written the work which we now offer to our fellow-citizens. But each age owes to its successors the truth in regard to its own annals. The young men who have been born since Sumter was fired on have a right to all their elders know of the important events they came too late to share in. The life and the fame of Lincoln will not have their legitimate effect of instruction and example unless the Circumstances among which he lived and found his opportunities are placed in their true light before the men who never saw him. To write the life of this great American in such a way as to show his relations to the times in which he moved, thbe stupendous Issues he controlled, the remarkable men by whom he was surrounded, has been the purpose which the authors have diligently pursued for many years. We can say nothing of the result of our labor; only those who have been similarly employed can appreciate the sense of inadequate performance with which we regard what we have accomplished. We can only Claim for our work that we have devoted to it sixteen years of almost unremitting assiduity that we have neglected no means in our power to ascertain the truth that we have rejected no authentic facts essential to a candid story that we have had no theory to establish, no personal grudge to gratify, no unavowed objects to subserve. We have aimed to write a sufficiently full and absolutely honest history of a great man and a great time; and although we take it for granted that we have made mistakes, that we have fallen into such errors and inaccuracies as are unavoidable in so large a work, we promise there shall not be found a line in all these chapters dictated by malice or unfairness. Our desire to have this work placed under the eyes of the greatest possible number of readers induced us to accept the generous offer of the century magazine to print it first in these pages. In this way it will receive the intelligent criticism of a million people, con temporaries of the events narrated, and we expect to profit by the suggestions and corrections which such a method of publication invites. Moreover, as we have endeavored to write this history with a purpose of absolute fairness to every party and every section of the country, we ardently desire that, by its wide dissemination, it may contribute to the growth and maintenance throughout all our borders of that spirit of freedom and nationality for which Abraham Lincoln lived and died. Synopsis Life of Abraham Lincoln by : Joseph Hartwell Barrett

Excerpt from Life of Abraham Lincoln: His Early History, Political Career, Speeches in and Out of Congress Gentlemen, only a few more words as to this alliance. For my part, I have to say, that whether there be such an alliance, depends, so far as I know, upon what may be a right defini tion of the tei'm alliance. If for the Republican party to see the other great party to among themselves, and not be glad of it - if that is an I am in; but if it is meant to be said that the Republicans had formed an alliance going beyond that, by which there is contribution of money or sacrifice Of principle on the one side or the other, so far as the Republican party is concerned, if there be any such thing, I protest that I neither know any thing of'it, nor do I believe it. I will, however, say - as I think this branch of the argument is lugged in - I would before I leave it, state, for the benefit Of those concerned, that one of those same Buchanan men did once tell inc of an argument that he made for his opposition to Judge Douglas. He said that a friend of our Senator Douglas had been talking to him, and had among other things said to him Why, you don't _want to beat Douglas? Yes, said he I do want to beat him, and I will tell you why. I believe his original Nebraska Bill was right in the abstract, but it was wrong in the time that it was brought forward. It was wrong in the application to a Territory in regard to which the question had been settled; it Was brought forward at a time when nobody asked him it Was tendered to the South when the South had not asked for it.
