While the subjects and the styles are varied according to the opinions and pursuits of the authors, while we have grave books and gay books, books political, statistical, agricultural, and abolitionist, - books by Whigs and by Tories, by men and by women, - books differing, in short, in almost every conceivable way, we find but one characteristic common to all, and that is satire. We complain in England of the bad feeling that exists in America towards us: if such be the case, can we be surprised at it? The great mass of Americans know us only through the medium of our popular authors; and the observations of these upon America are not, we must allow, of a nature to conciliate a sensitive and irritable people.
