LEGACY IN WORDS I ponder what I can leave My children when I’m gone, For I don’t have a lot of money, Nor a great big fancy home. They will have some memories But those will surely fade. What tangible thing can I leave, To remind them of my place. I put some words together Some of them even rhyme They tell of my inner most thoughts And things going on at that time. When the children read this book Of poetry they will see My legacy in words A gift to them from me. Hopefully it will encourage them When they are feeling down, And they can feel my presence When I’m no longer around.

This book of poems was written with inspiration and from the heart. It came to pass as if God was speaking to me giving me the words to put on paper, the poems are spiritually discerned and written out of love. At times, I knew it was God speaking to me as you will find as you read these poems as well as in the books to follow. This book of poems was meant to inspire those that read them, whether they make you sad, happy, or encourage you. It was God who seen me through a five year serve out incarcerations. That is five years straight, from 1997 to the end of 2001. I have been out for 15 years and have not looked back. You have to be down and out, it is then that you will call out to God, "God help me". So, I am truly grateful that he did just that. I spent my time reading and writing a lot, also taking care of my physical body by working out and doing a lot of walking. As I walked, I had a little pocket version of the New Testament and I would read scriptures until I memorized them. One of the first scriptures I memorized was Proverbs 3:5-6. The scripture says "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, lean not unto thine own understanding in all thy ways acknowledge him, and he will direct thy paths". (King James Version) May you be inspired and blessed as you read these poems. God has blessed me and he wants me to share that it was Him that changes life. When my grandmother died and I was asked to give her eulogy, I had, in my possession, one of her Bibles. In the margins of that Bible, she had written several things: words of wisdom, take-away points from some sermon or another, personal exclamations. In addition to that Bible, I also have several recipe cards, written in her sometimes-unsure script. These relics are precious; they are more valuable than a priceless antique or an original Monet. I am happy to have them. What I don't have, are her stories-those stories she would tell after dinner, or while she was stringing beans, or sewing-those stories that would pass on to me the beliefs, values, and experiences that had shaped her life. I cherish the few pieces of her story that remain, and I long for more. Ultimately, whether the writing you do in response to this Legacy of Words Workbook is done for your own benefit, or you plan to pass these words on to someone else, what you are committing to do is leave "just a little more" of yourself behind.
