Synopsis Ophthalmic Histopathology by : W.R. Lee

The first edition of this book was written prior to 1991 and it seemed appropriate to revise and update the text in view of the rapid expansion in information which has occurred in the last decade. Furthermore, in the first edition, the reproduction of some of the illustrations was not of sufficient standard to be of value to the reader. Accordingly some of the inadequate figures have been replaced by colour figures which have been inserted into the text. Colour has also been included because many histopathological illustrations, e. g. special stains such as Gram, PAS, trichrome stains etc. , and immunohistochemical reactions, are much better appreciated. With regard to references, I have taken advantage of the currently available access to all the medical literat ure, which is what I anticipate will be the course of action of the reader. Glasgow, 2001 Acknowledgements It is a pleasure to re cord the support I have received in the last decade from Professors Wallace Foulds, Colin Kirkness and Gordon Dutton and from Mr Bertil Damato in their continuing efforts to educate me in the subtleties of clinical ophthalmology. I am particularly indebted to Dr Sarah Coupland who provided the information on lymphoid neoplasia which is included in this book and I must thank Dr Weng Sehu who established the computer equipment which has been so valuable in the preparation of the new illustrations.

Synopsis Ocular Pathology by : David J. Apple

This new fifth edition of Ocular Pathology maintains its reputation as an essential reference for understanding, diagnosing, and treating diseases of the eye. Offering comprehensive information on the latest clinical findings, it is unique in its full-colour atlas presentation of pathology specimens reflecting the most current topics in the field. It remains an excellent reference for practising ophthalmologists, cataract and refractive surgeons, and all individuals interested in vision care and visual sciences. Assists the reader in understanding the nature, causes and development of abnormal conditions in the eye. Updated self-assessment questions test overall understanding of the field and prepare for the Board Examination. Book is well-positioned for all levels of Eye Health Care Providers Over 240 color photographs and 930 black-and-white illustrations clearly depict hundreds of clinical entities and pathology specimens (external and slit-lamp photographs, fundus photographs, retinal angiograms, anatomic, histologic and electromicroscopic photos of all eye tissues and their diseases, along with numerous sketches and schematic illustrations of tissues). Increased number of Questions and Answers, from 35 to 50 per chapter, for a total of 550. Update on diagnosis and therapy of retinal diseases, including AIDS, and new material on indocyain green angiography. Updated sections on pathology of lens, cataract surgery, and intraocular lenses. This material has been updated to include modern small incision surgery and foldable lens technology, which has greatly expanded since 1989 and is now the preferred cataract surgical procedure of most ophthalmologists. This book continues to be the only text available which covers the pathology of cataract surgery and intraocular lenses. A new chapter has been added which represents the first comprehensive publication on clinicopathological correlation of refractive surgery, including incisional refractive surgery (RK), refractive surgery with lasers (PRK and LASIK), and refractive intraocular lenses. The information is based on the extensive experience of Dr. Apple's laboratory at the Storm Eye Institute in Charleston. The material and illustrations in this chapter have never been published elsewhere. There has been extensive update of references of all topics in the book.

Synopsis Ocular Tumors in Animals and Humans by : Robert L. Peiffer

The application of evidence-based veterinary medicine (EBVM) can assist in improving and optimising the diagnosis, prognosis, control, treatment and ultimately the welfare of animals. It can also provide the user with a methodology for appropriate, patient orientated life-long, self-directed, learning. To practise evidence-based veterinary medicine we require a range of skills that we may not have. This book will explain what evidence-based veterinary medicine is and show how it can be applied to veterinary practice to improve the quality of care for patients and provide informed choices for owners. It will provide the reader with a toolkit of skills necessary to practise evidence-based veterinary medicine. The authors explain how to: · Transform information needs into a series of clinical questions that can be answered · Search for best available external evidence · Critically appraise the evidence for its validity and importance · Apply the results in clinical practice · Understand the process of diagnosis and use of clinical diagnostic decision support systems · Perform a decision analysis This book is aimed at practitioners but will be of interest to veterinary surgeons at any stage of their training or career wishing to learn about EBVM. The authors are responsible for devising and teaching an EBVM course at the veterinary school at Cambridge. Dr Peter Cockcroft, Clinical lecturer, Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine, University of Cambridge.
