Yet, more than 90 million U.S. adults lack adequate literacy. Furthermore, only 38 percent of U.S. 12th graders are at or above proficient in reading. Recent advances in neuroimaging and genetics technologies have enhanced our understanding of neurodevelopmental disorders in adults. Among the disabilities covered at the state and federal levels, autism and related conditions are a sharply growing diagnostic category among children and young adults.
