Synopsis The Lawless Land by : David Waddell

The most untamed and wildest spot in the United States back in 1882 was a stretch of land between the Pecos and Rio Grande rivers. This area of land was beyond the reach of lawmen and the most vicious Outlaws, Comancheros, and renegade Apaches resided there. Two men, Judge Roy Bean and a Texas Ranger named Mason Crenshaw, set out trying to tame this lawless land. Will their efforts succeed, or will this stretch of land always remain lawless? A woman named Casey McRae leaves St. Louis with her father and his new bride to search for treasure rumored to be hidden in an old Spanish mission located in the untamed land west of the Pecos River. Will they find the old Spanish mission and the treasure rumored to be hidden inside it, or will the trials and tribulations they face during their hunt for the treasure get them killed or forever lost in the untamed and lawless area they ventured into? A retired gunfighter named Clint Coon enjoyed working as a blacksmith. He was happy and satisfied with his new profession, but all that changed after he received a letter informing him that his younger sister had been kidnapped and then taken into the lawless land west of the Pecos River. He closes down his Blacksmith Shop and sets out to rescue his sister. Will the retired gunfighter be able to rescue his sister, or will she be trapped for the rest of her life in the lawless land west of the Pecos River? Every one of these characters has different reasons for venturing into The Lawless Land. Will they succeed in their quests, or will they get killed or become forever trapped in the untamed and lawless land west of the Pecos River?

Synopsis The Lawless Land by : Rex Mumford

They entered the valley, harsh yet beautiful. With danger around every hill. Where only a fast gun and quick thinking can save a person, and even then only with luck. A lot of luck. Rex Mumford brings to life in this western novel much of the suspense, action, and surprise of the traditional old west. Follow the lives of those portrayed in this novel during a time when men and women wanted little more than some land and to live peacefully. Yet when faced with difficult challenges they could and would meet them head on. Often they were the judge and jury with little time to decide the fate of those that wronged them. When someone draws on you, you only have two choices, be faster or die in: The Lawless Land Brown's Hole, one of the stops along the outlaw trail. A beautiful valley for ranching, but also a haven for those hiding from the law with no were else to run. More often than not, they possessed only a fast horse, and even faster gun hand. It was fight or die. Most fought, some died. Two deputy marshals, leaving their badges and authority behind, and a girl with a different agenda, all enter the valley known as Brown's Hole. Two looking for answers, one looking for revenge. Faced with challenges and odds never before faced, each will find what they are looking for and a whole lot more than they bargained for. The only problem is surviving.

Synopsis Law in a Lawless Land by : Michael Taussig

A modern nation in a state of total disorder, Colombia is an international flashpoint—wracked by more than half a century of civil war, political conflict, and drug-trade related violence—despite a multibillion dollar American commitment that makes it the third-largest recipient of U.S. foreign aid. Law in a Lawless Land offers a rare and penetrating insight into the nature of Colombia's present peril. In a nuanced account of the human consequences of a disintegrating state, anthropologist Michael Taussig chronicles two weeks in a small town in Colombia's Cauca Valley taken over by paramilitaries that brazenly assassinate adolescent gang members. Armed with automatic weapons and computer-generated lists of names and photographs, the paramilitaries have the tacit support of the police and even many of the desperate townspeople, who are seeking any solution to the crushing uncertainty of violence in their lives. Concentrating on everyday experience, Taussig forces readers to confront a kind of terror to which they have become numb and complacent. "If you want to know what it is like to live in a country where the state has disintegrated, this moving book by an anthropologist well known for his writings on murderous Colombia will tell you."—Eric Hobsbawm

Synopsis A Frontier Made Lawless by : Joseph Lawson

In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the region of Liangshan in southwest China was plagued by violence. Indigenous Nuosu communities clashed with Han migrants, the Qing and Republican states, and local warlords. Large numbers of Nuosu and Han alike were kidnapped and killed in widespread patterns of captive taking. The first English-language history of Liangshan, A Frontier Made Lawless challenges the view that the persistent turmoil was the result of population pressures, opium production, and the growth of local paramilitary groups. Instead, Joseph Lawson argues that the conflict resulted from the lack of a common framework for dealing with property disputes, compounded by the repeated destabilization of the region by turmoil elsewhere in China. Drawing on a range of sources including court records, locals’ memoirs, regional government records and surveys, and Nuosu epic poetry, Lawson adds new insights and comparative perspectives to the study of conflict in Liangshan.
