Synopsis Law of the Links by : Hay Chapman

Excerpt from Law of the Links: Rules, Principles and Etiquette of Golf Certain notable incidents in competition recently have brought up golfers with a sharp turn as to the wisdom and importance of knowing the rules of golf and practicing them rigidly. In the final of the Canadian amateur championship of 1922, there was an indecent demonstration against a referee because the gallery was ignorant of the rule which prevents a player from lifting "a loose impediment" more than a club's length from his ball. In this case it was a cigarette box - it might even have been a single cigarette - which Fraser thoughtlessly lifted before playing his ball, not on the putting green. The decision on this occasion caused a big commotion among the gallery, and the demonstration so "rattled" Fraser's opponent that, after being dormie, he lost the match and the championship. Synopsis Historical Dictionary of Golf by : Bill Mallon

Golf has been called the greatest of all games, but it has also been derided by none other than Mark Twain as nothing more than a good walk spoiled. Traditional teaching holds that golf originated in Scotland around the 15th century. However, there is historical evidence of games similar to golf being played in the low countries of Europe back in the 13th century. Over the many centuries of golf's evolution, the balls used have changed greatly, as have the clubs, the holes, the courses, and the entire game itself. The Historical Dictionary of Golf presents a comprehensive history of the game through a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, photos, and over 300 cross-referenced dictionary entries on places, teams, terminology, and people, including Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman, Lee Trevino, Jack Nicklaus, Annika Sörenstam, Lorena Ochoa, Phil Mickelson, and, of course, Tiger Woods. Appendixes of the members of the World Golf Hall of Fame, the Major Championships of Golf, the International Team Events, and the Professional Tour Awards are also included.

Yet it is equally true that there are some things every golfer must know before setting foot on the course, lest he risk making an utter ass of himself.
