Synopsis Leisure and Tourism Landscapes by : Cara Aitchison
Increasingly significant as mediators of spatial identity and meaning, leisure, tourism, culture and heritage are only now beginning to be located within the rapidly evolving discourses of poststructuralist geographies. Exploring the influence of leisure and tourism on the production, representation and consumption of landscape, the first half of this important book focuses on different ways of ‘seeing’ or representing landscape, whereas the second half examines different forms of productive consumption in leisure and tourism. Both symbolic and material spaces of leisure and tourism are also examined in relation to urban and rural landscapes, heritage landscapes, gendered landscapes, and landscapes of sexuality and desire. With a multidisciplinary approach and a strong theoretical content which builds on poststructuralist theories, this is undoubtedly an important addition to literature in the field.

Synopsis Extreme Landscapes of Leisure by : Patrick Laviolette
In recent years, there has been an increased engagement throughout the social sciences with the study of extreme places and practices. Dangerous games and adventure tours have shifted from being marginal, exotic or mad to being more than merely acceptable. They are now exemplary, mainstream even: there are a variety of new types, increasing numbers of people are doing them and they are being appropriated and have infiltrated more and more contexts. This book argues that hazardous sports and adventure tourism have become rather paradoxical. As a set of activities where players and holidaymakers are closer to death or danger than they would otherwise be, they are the complete opposite of normal games or vacations. Adventure sports and tours reverse the general definition of a holiday as being an escape from the seriousness of everyday life, as in most cases, they are innately serious, requiring as they do 'life or death' decision-making. Beginning with the rise in colonial explorations and moving on to consider the Dangerous Sports Club of Oxford, this book examines the increasing phenomena of adventure sports such as bungy jumping, cliff jumping or 'tomb-stoning', surfing and parkour within a framework of positive risk. It explores how certain assumptions about knowledge, agency, the body and nature are beginning to coalesce around newly developing spheres of social relations. Additionally, extreme games have become activities that are germane to the dawning of green social thought and so the book also addresses issues that deal with the intimate connections that exist between pleasure and the moral responsibility towards the environment.

Synopsis Extreme Landscapes of Leisure by : Patrick Laviolette
An investigation into the increasing popularity of adventure sports like bungy jumping, surfing and parkour. Taking an ethnographic approach, the book examines what attracts humans to interact with extreme landscapes and the impact such interactions have on society as a whole, the individuals involved and the landscapes themselves. The book also addresses how best to reconcile enjoyment of adventure sports with a moral responsibility towards the environment.

Synopsis Landscapes in Pastel by : Paul Hardy
Paul Hardy shares the delights and beauty of working with a medium that is versatile, exciting and inspiring. This colourful, practical guide illustrates the techniques of applying pastel to a variety of paper surfaces, from field sketching and composing a painting to painting skies, trees, water and reflections. Step-by-step demonstrations show the reader how to paint a series of landscapes from a moody moorland pastoral scene to a gently flowing river, aglow with the warm colours of autumnal trees. The artist is rewarded as fields, trees and flowers spring to life when pastel is applied to paper.

Synopsis Multispecies Leisure: Human-Animal Interactions in Leisure Landscapes by : Paula Danby
Multispecies Leisure: Human-Animal Interactions in Leisure Landscapes seeks to ‘bring the animal in’ to the leisure studies domain and contribute to greater understanding of leisure as a complex, interwoven multispecies phenomenon. The emerging multidisciplinary field of human-animal studies encourages researchers to move beyond narrow focus on human-centric practices and ways of being in the world, and to recognise that human and non-human beings are positioned within shared ecological, social, cultural and political spaces. With some exceptions, leisure studies has been slow to embrace the ‘animal turn’ and consider how leisure actions, experiences and landscapes are shaped through multispecies encounters between humans, other animals, birds and insects, plants and environment. This book begins to address this gap by presenting research that considers leisure as more-than-human experiences. The authors consider leisure with nonhuman others (e.g. dogs, horses), affecting those others (e.g. environmental concerns) and affected by the non-human (e.g. landscape, weather), by exploring the ‘contact zones’ between humans and other species. Thus, this work contributes to greater understanding of leisure as a complex, multispecies phenomenon. The chapters in this book were originally published as a Special Issue of the Leisure Studies.

Synopsis Drawing Landscapes by : R. Swanwick
Ronald Swanwick's aim is to inspire the artist to go out and use a pencil at least as often as a brush. He shares his approach to drawing landscapes - teaching how to observe and soak up the atmosphere of a landscape, and opens the book with sections on composition, perspective and making marks and tones. Also, he clearly explains his language of drawing - in which there are only four methods of making marks - dots, lines, squiggles and washes. The mark you make and the tonal value you ascribe to it are used to describe the texture of a surface. Putting together these marks and tones allows you to build up a drawing to look like anything you wish. Drawing Landscapes has further sections on dealing with sunshine and shadows, drawing from photographs, drawing skies, trees and water and how to incorporate people and animals into a scene. Having accomplished these techniques the reader can practise by doing one of two step-by-step projects - a derelict farm building in pencil or a delicate snowscene in chalk and charcoal. A number of Ronald's finished drawings are included throughout the book for inspiration.
