Synopsis School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support by : Katrina Barker

Drawing upon twenty years of experience putting the Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) framework into practice, this is the first definitive handbook to document the ways in which Australian schools have embraced and applied school-wide PBS, and to provide guidance on implementation. Written by key Australian researchers and implementers with extensive expertise, School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support: The Australian Handbook is an important contribution to the work of school leaders and teachers. This book illustrates the significant contribution of PBS to improving schools and the potential for its systems approach to be expanded across education systems. The book’s structure corresponds to the theme of a continuum of supports, addressing the key conceptual foundations of PBS and its representation within school-wide implementation. Each chapter comprises a mix of research, practical case studies and examples, and features learning intentions, keywords, further reading, advice on applying your ideas, and links to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. PBS has gained significant attention in Australia over the past two decades and its principles now underpin many successful systems and practices in schools and community and disability services. This book will be a foundational resource for implementers and coaches of PBS, educational leaders and policy advisors, pre- and in-service teachers, as well as researchers.

Synopsis Unifying Educational Systems by : Leonard C. Burrello

Unifying Educational Systems encourages leaders to move beyond the traditional forms and rituals of leadership for special education that are caught within traditional definitions of a continuum of services. Grounded in public policy debates, research on teaching and learning, and an emerging consensus throughout the leadership community that calls into question our current practices, chapters in this volume provide a discussion of the purpose, principles, and paradoxes extant in the implementation of current special education policy. Chapter authors discuss how students are currently served, the feasibility of re-conceptualizing special education leadership in the current policy context, and the challenges for the future. Ultimately, Unifying Educational Systems calls for a new policy framework to integrate special education within the larger instructional support system in schools, in order to support a social justice and inclusive practices agenda.

Synopsis Systematic Screening for Behavior Disorders (SSBD) by : Hill M. Walker

This kit presents the Systematic Screening for Behavior Disorders (SSBD) as a tool to identify behavior disorders in elementary-aged students. The SSBD procedure is a three-stage, multiple-gating mass screening system. In the first stage the teacher systematically ranks all students according to either externalizing or internalizing behavioral profiles. In the second stage, the three highest ranking students from each of the two dimensions are evaluated by the teacher using two rating scales. In the third stage, any students identified by stage 2 criteria are further evaluated by another school professional using structured observation and recording procedures in both the classroom and playground settings. Students who exceed stage 3 cutoff scores are referred to child study teams. The kit contains a user's guide and administration manual, a technical manual reporting psychometric properties of the SSBD, an observer training manual, and multiple copies of the screening instruments. The user's guide and administration manual addresses the following topics: implementation and administration procedures; instrument score calculation procedures; decision-making criteria and procedures; recommended additional measures; school applications of the procedure; and recommendations and resources for designing interventions for identified students.
