The physiological and pathological significance of the kallikrein-kinin system was recently explored extensively, resulting in a rapid accumulation of information regarding their potential importance. This publication provides an integrated picture of the latest information on the kallikrein kinin system. It contains contributions from morphologists, geneticists, biochemists, pharmacologists, physiologists, and clinicians. The Fifth International Kinin Congress (Nov. 29-Dec. 3, 1987) provided a forum for the exchange of information and ideas on the kallikrein-kinin system. The participation of more than 350 scientists from 23 countries reflects the widespread interest and international scope of research activity in the physiological and pathological functions of the kallikrein-kinin system. A total of 275 papers including posters were presented, attesting to the unquestioned success of this Congress. These proceedings, in two volumes, contain the collective studies presented, studies of high scientific standard that provoked stimulating and fruitful discussions. Also included in these volumes are the two plenary lectures presented by Dr. H.A. Margolius (USA) and Dr. S. Nakanishi (Japan). During the last decade our knowledge of the role of the kallikrein kinin system in health and disease has been greatly advanced by the develop ment of antagonists to bradykinin and the introduction to clinical practice of converting enzyme inhibitors. Symposia on converting enzyme and on recent advances in research on the kallikrein-kinin system are included in the proceedings.

Recent Progress in Hormone Research, Volume 25 presents the proceedings of the 26th meeting of the Laurentian Hormone Conference held in Mont Tremblant, Quebec, Canada, on August 23-29, 1968. The book presents papers on reproductive endocrinology (i.e. a model for the regulation of ovulation in the rat; comparative aspects of uterine-luteal relationships), proinsulin (i.e. proinsulin and the biosynthesis of insulin), and the secretion of hormones by tumors of nonendocrine origin (i.e. clinical and laboratory studies of ectopic humoral syndromes). The text also includes papers on the ultrastructure of the endocrine glands; on the thyroid (i.e. studies of the thyroid iodide ""trap"" in human); on neuroendocrinology (i.e. the mammalian pineal as a neuroendocrine transducer), and on steroid hormones (i.e. metabolic events associated with steroid hydroxylation by the adrenal cortex; and steroid dynamics under steady-state conditions). Eleven years have elapsed since the appearance of the first Volume and it is with great pleasure that the Editor is now able to present Volume 14. During these eleven years various fields of drug research have undergone important, partly revolutionary, changes. A number of these have already been dealt with, so that the series PROGRESS IN DRUG RESEARCH contains a comprehensive review of a substantial part of our current knowledge. The Editor is particularly grateful for the opportunity of transmitting to those connected with the development of drugs the extensive knowledge of the Authors, who, without exception, are themselves actively engaged in research. Drug research is currently in a state of transformation: reconsideration in the light of the past and reorientation with a view to the future. To a large extent this is due to the tumultuous developments in the last 20 years, developments which are unparalleled in the history of medicine and the consequences of which cannot yet be completely evaluated. Unfortunately, however, the current situation is not devoid of its unpleasant and even tragic aspects, aspects which fall outside the research worker's sphere or influence. Those connected with drug research, be they in industry, in universities or in clinics, are aware of these problems, and, as a result of this awareness, are all the more in need of an aid which will assist them in ascertaining the current position and in fixing future goals.
