Synopsis Justify This by : Nick Searcy
“I’ve played serial killers, rapists, racists, Klansmen, sexual harassers, thieves—I mean, let’s face it. I’ve played a LOT of Democrats.” —Nick Searcy In Justify This, veteran character actor Nick Searcy takes you through his wide-ranging career, from both sides of the camera as an actor and director, to guest-hosting for Rush Limbaugh, managing a professional wrestler, co-starring in the hit show Justified—and somehow continuing to work in Hollywood even AFTER he went to Washington, DC, on January 6, 2021. Director of Gosnell: The Trial of America’s Biggest Serial Killer and producer/star of the seminal documentary about January 6, Capitol Punishment, Nick’s story of following his heart to become a professional actor and following his conscience and faith to stand up for what he believed—even though it might have cost him the career he built—will be an inspiration to you—and make you laugh along the way. Actor, director, producer, writer, wrestling manager, guest columnist, stand-up comic, filmmaker, and one of the meanest Twitter people ever, Nick Searcy is a unique voice of common sense in today’s culture.

Synopsis Mistakes Were Made (but Not by Me) by : Carol Tavris
Why do people dodge responsibility when things fall apart? Why the parade of public figures unable to own up when they make mistakes? Why the endless marital quarrels over who is right? Why can we see hypocrisy in others but not in ourselves? Are we all liars? Or do we really believe the stories we tell? Renowned social psychologists Carol Tavris and Elliot Aronson take a compelling look into how the brain is wired for self-justification. When we make mistakes, we must calm the cognitive dissonance that jars our feelings of self-worth. And so we create fictions that absolve us of responsibil.

Synopsis How to Justify Torture by : Alex Adams
From Batman Begins to Tom Clancy, How to Justify Torture shows how contemporary culture creates simplified narratives about good guy torturers and bad guy victims, how dangerous this is politically, and what we can do to challenge it. If there was a bomb hidden somewhere in a major city, and you had the person responsible in your custody, would you torture them to get the information needed to stop the bomb exploding, preventing a devastating terrorist attack and saving thousands of lives? This is the ticking bomb scenario -- a thought experiment designed to demonstrate that torture can be justified. In How to Justify Torture, cultural critic Alex Adams examines the ticking bomb scenario in-depth, looking at the ways it is presented in films, novels, and TV shows -- from Batman Begins and Dirty Harry to French military thrillers and home invasion narratives. By critiquing its argument step by step, this short, provocative book reminds us that, despite what the ticking bomb scenario will have us believe, torture can never be justified.

Synopsis Design for Hackers by : David Kadavy
Discover the techniques behind beautiful design by deconstructing designs to understand them The term 'hacker' has been redefined to consist of anyone who has an insatiable curiosity as to how things work—and how they can try to make them better. This book is aimed at hackers of all skill levels and explains the classical principles and techniques behind beautiful designs by deconstructing those designs in order to understand what makes them so remarkable. Author and designer David Kadavy provides you with the framework for understanding good design and places a special emphasis on interactive mediums. You'll explore color theory, the role of proportion and geometry in design, and the relationship between medium and form. Packed with unique reverse engineering design examples, this book inspires and encourages you to discover and create new beauty in a variety of formats. Breaks down and studies the classical principles and techniques behind the creation of beautiful design Illustrates cultural and contextual considerations in communicating to a specific audience Discusses why design is important, the purpose of design, the various constraints of design, and how today's fonts are designed with the screen in mind Dissects the elements of color, size, scale, proportion, medium, and form Features a unique range of examples, including the graffiti in the ancient city of Pompeii, the lack of the color black in Monet's art, the style and sleekness of the iPhone, and more By the end of this book, you'll be able to apply the featured design principles to your own web designs, mobile apps, or other digital work.

Synopsis APC Case Book by : Austen Imber
Following his succesful How to Pass the APC: Essential Advice for General Practice Surveyors, Austen Imber's latest publication examines surveyors' work in practice. The case work is based mainly on examples of APC candidates' critical analysis, and is supported by additional guidance on the key issues arising in practice. In a clear, practical way the book covers the public, private and corporate sectors and enables graduates to understand the roles of the various participants in the property industry. Subjects covered include investment valuation, development valuation/appraisal, profits valuation, the Red Book, lettings, sales, rent reviews, lease renewals, estate management, ratings, planning, development, regeneration, compulsory purchase, telecoms and insolvency. The hands-on style of the candidates' critical analysis, clearly shows the detailed reasoning behind the initial strategies and decisions throughout a case. The examples of APC interview questions and tasks for study are invaluable in encouraging graduates to consider further issues - including the many practical problems which graduates need to understand in order to succeed in practice and with their APC interview. Professional ethics are also represented within the cases featured. The APC Casebook is an essential tool in preparing for the final assessment stage of the APC, as well as being an important reference source for candidates throughout their APC training.

Synopsis Photoelectron Statistics by : B. Saleh
With the recent great expansion in optics and laser applications, several new areas of research have emerged, among which are: the theory of coherence, photon statistics, speckle phenomenon, statistical optics, atmospheric propa gation, optical communications, and light-beating and photon-correlation spectroscopy. A factor common to these overlapping subjects is their basic dependence on the treatment of light as a randomly fluctuating excitation. Moreover, they all necessitate a thorough understanding of the phenomenon of light detection and the additional randomness it introduces. My objective in writing this book is to provide a unified and general presentation of a basic theoretical background central to these areas. This book has a threefold purpose: to present a systematic treatment of the statistical properties of optical fields, to develop methods for deter mining the statistics of the photoelectron events that are generated when such fields are intercepted by photodetectors, and to examine methods of estimating unknown field parameters from measurements of the photoelectron events. Emphasis is placed on the photoelectron measurements that yield in formation pertinent to spectroscopy and optical communication. Although some books that treat the theory of coherence and the statisti cal properties of light are available, the vast body of information central to problems of photoelectron statistics and its applications is scattered in various professional journals and conference proceedings.
