Synopsis The Making of a Sportsman by : Edward W. Stilwill

My relationship with Ed Stilwill began in 1981 when he joined the Grand TraverseRadiologists as the fi fth physician. I was their Retirement Trust Officer and Ed and hisassociates were my clients. In 1994 Ed asked if he could join me on a two week deer andantelope hunting trip to Montana. He drew a non-resident license and I did not. That waswhen he told me he had never hunted big game before. On our trips, Ed would bring a hard back novel and take meticulous notes. He would return home and dictate these on cassettes for our pleasure later in the year. Ed is a student of western history and in particular, American Indian history which is used extensively in his writings. These stories tell of a 43 year old who travels west and north in pursuit of antelope, deer, elk, caribou, waterfowl and upland birds. Ed makes a few mistakes but learns fast and soon becomes a sportsman with the highest regard for the animals he pursues. These are a collection of tapes that have been edited by me for this book.Ed lives and practices medicine in Traverse City, Michigan when not at his mountain tophome in Big Sky, Montana. I have taken an early retirement, moved to Helena, Montanawith my wife where we purchased horses and began a new chapter of our own.

Synopsis The Last Ivory Hunter by : Peter Hathaway Capstick

A chance meeting around a safari campfire on the banks of the Mupamadazi River leads to The Last Ivory Hunter: The Saga of Wally Johnson, a grand tale of African adventure by renowned hunting author Peter Hathaway Capstick. Wally Johnson spent half a century in Mozambique hunting white gold—ivory. Most men died at this hazardous trade. He’s the last one able to tell his story. In hours of conversations by mopane fired in the African bush, Wally described his career—how he survived the massive bite of a Gaboon viper, buffalo gorings, floods, disease, and most dangerous of all, gold fever. He bluffed down 200 armed poachers almost single-handedly, and survived rocket attacks from communist revolutionaries during Mozambique’s plunge into chaos in 1975. In Botswana, at age 63, Wally continued his career. Though the great tuskers have largely gone and most of Wally’s colleagues are dead, Wally has survived. His words are rugged testimony to an Africa that is now a distant dream.
