Synopsis The Books of Joel, Obadiah, Jonah, Nahum, Habakkuk and Zephaniah by : John D. W. Watts

The six Old Testament books dealt with in this volume of the Commentary are part of a larger unit originally copied on one scroll and called, for the sake of simplicity, the books of the twelve or minor prophets. The prophetic visions, liturgies and oracles contained in the twelve books were collected over a period of more than 300 years and given their final shape not earlier than the middle of the fifth century BC. In his opening chapter Dr Watts provides the historical and liturgical background to the books and discusses the nature and role of prophecy in worship. In the style established for the series, the NEB translation of the text then follows, divided into brief sections alternating with sections of commentary. The results of Old Testament scholarship and modern theological though are conveyed to the student and the layman in simple language.

Synopsis Jonah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah by : James Bruckner

The NIV Application Commentary helps you communicate and apply biblical text effectively in today's context. To bring the ancient messages of the Bible into today's world, each passage is treated in three sections: Original Meaning. Concise exegesis to help readers understand the original meaning of the biblical text in its historical, literary, and cultural context. Bridging Contexts. A bridge between the world of the Bible and the world of today, built by discerning what is timeless in the timely pages of the Bible. Contemporary Significance. This section identifies comparable situations to those faced in the Bible and explores relevant application of the biblical messages. The author alerts the readers of problems they may encounter when seeking to apply the passage and helps them think through the issues involved. This unique, award-winning commentary is the ideal resource for today's preachers, teachers, and serious students of the Bible, giving them the tools, ideas, and insights they need to communicate God's Word with the same powerful impact it had when it was first written.

Synopsis Prophecy: The Minor Prophets by : Harold Lerch

This book is the last in a series of four books about prophecy. This volume is about the often-overlooked minor prophets. In reality, they include very interesting information about events that happened after their time and events still in our future. Amos, Hosea, Micah, and Nahum wrote in the Eighth and Seventh Centuries BC [Before Christ] about coming judgment. Joel, Jonah, Zephaniah, and Habakkuk wrote in the Ninth through Seventh Centuries BC about faith and repentance. Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi wrote in the Eighth and Seventh Centuries BC. Haggai’s ministry was to scold the returned exiles for their delay in rebuilding the Temple and to encourage them to set to work. Zechariah predicted the second coming of Christ, His reign, His priesthood, His kingship, and more. Malachi is the final prophet with the last message of the Old Testament. It includes the hope in the prophecy of John the Baptist's ministry. This series is contained in four books. The whole scope of prophecy must be considered in determining the meaning of any particular passage. Therefore, a reading of all four books will greatly improve understanding. This volume includes a bonus chapter— The Book of Revelation.

Synopsis Jonah, Micah, and Nahum by : Kristofer Holroyd

The Knowing the Bible series is a resource designed to help Bible readers better understand and apply God’s Word. These 12-week studies lead participants through books of the Bible and are made up of four basic components: (1) reflection questions help readers engage the text at a deeper level; (2) “Gospel Glimpses” highlight the gospel of grace throughout the book; (3) “Whole-Bible Connections” show how any given passage connects to the Bible’s overarching story of redemption, culminating in Christ; and (4) “Theological Soundings” identify how historic orthodox doctrines are taught or reinforced throughout Scripture. With contributions from an array of influential pastors and church leaders, these gospel-centered studies will help Christians see and cherish the message of God’s grace on every page of the Bible. The books of Jonah, Micah, and Nahum announce the judgment of God through his prophets—flawed messengers who nevertheless served as vehicles for God’s compassion, calling their hearers to repent of their evil, turn from their false gods, and worship the one true God. Over the course of 12 weeks, this study helps readers see the steadfast love, mercy, and patience of the Lord, the deliverer and protector who offers forgiveness to all who turn from their sin and trust in him. Part of the Knowing the Bible series.
