Synopsis Jewish Fairy Tales and Fables by : Gertrude Landa
The very cordial welcome given to my earlier volume of “Jewish Fairy Tales and Fables” has prompted me to draw further upon Rabbinic lore in the interest, chiefly, of the children. How the wise Rabbis of old considered the necessities of the little ones, whose minds they understood so perfectly, is obvious from such legends as those dealing with boyish exploits of the great Biblical characters, Abraham, Moses, and David. These I have rewritten from the stories in the Talmud and Midrash in a manner suitable for the children of to-day. I have ventured also beyond the confines of these two wonderful compilations. There is a wealth of delightful imagination in the legends and folk-lore of the Jews of a later period which is almost entirely unknown to children. I have drawn also on these sources for some of the stories here presented. My desire is to give boys and girls something Jewish which they may be able to regard as companion delights to the treasury of general fairy-lore and childish romance.

Synopsis Leaves from the Garden of Eden by :
In Leaves from the Garden of Eden, Howard Schwartz, a three-time winner of the National Jewish Book Award, has gathered together one hundred of the most astonishing and luminous stories from Jewish folk tradition. Just as Schwartz's award-winning book Tree of Souls collected the essential myths of Jewish tradition, Leaves from the Garden of Eden collects one hundred essential Jewish tales. As imaginative as the Arabian Nights, these stories invoke enchanted worlds, demonic realms, and mystical experiences. The four most popular types of Jewish tales are gathered here--fairy tales, folktales, supernatural tales, and mystical tales--taking readers on heavenly journeys, lifelong quests, and descents to the underworld. There is a dybbuk lurking in a well, a book that comes to life, and a world where Lilith, the Queen of Demons, seduces the unsuspecting. Here too are Jewish versions of many of the best-known tales, including "Cinderella," "Snow White," and "Rapunzel." Schwartz's retelling of one of these stories, "The Finger," inspired Tim Burton's film Corpse Bride.

Synopsis Burning Girls and Other Stories by : Veronica Schanoes
A Most Anticipated in 2021 Pick for The Independent | Buzzfeed | The Nerd Daily When we came to America, we brought anger and socialism and hunger. We also brought our demons. In Burning Girls and Other Stories, Veronica Schanoes crosses borders and genres with stories of fierce women at the margins of society burning their way toward the center. This debut collection introduces readers to a fantasist in the vein of Karen Russell and Kelly Link, with a voice all her own. Emma Goldman—yes, that Emma Goldman—takes tea with the Baba Yaga and truths unfold inside of exquisitely crafted lies. In "Among the Thorns," a young woman in seventeenth century Germany is intent on avenging the brutal murder of her peddler father, but discovers that vengeance may consume all that it touches. In the showstopping, awards finalist title story, "Burning Girls," Schanoes invests the immigrant narrative with a fearsome fairytale quality that tells a story about America we may not want—but need—to hear. Dreamy, dangerous, and precise, with the weight of the very oldest tales we tell, Burning Girls and Other Stories introduces a writer pushing the boundaries of both fantasy and contemporary fiction. Synopsis Not So Grimm by : Gila Weinberg
Fairy tales fascinate with their magic, romance, adventure and passion. At the same time, the messages they impart can be disturbing, implying that only the beautiful, powerful or cunning live happily ever after; and that the goal of a happy ending overshadows every other value. The Jewish stories collected in Not So Grimm bear striking similarities to such fairy tale classics as Sleeping Beauty and The Frog Prince. Their drama and romance capture the imagination, while celebrating different values, such as moral integrity, humility and compassion. Each tale is followed by a brief comparison to its fairy tale counterpart, demonstrating the significant twists of plot that alter the meaning of the story and bring a new message to the listener - one that is rooted in Jewish values, thought, and practice. The enthralling power of these stories vies with the most potent and poignant of classic fairy tales. The stories have been written for adults to enjoy and share with the children in their lives. They will enrich both the readers' and the listeners' Jewish experience, and people their imaginations with a colorful and inspiring cast of characters.

Synopsis JEWISH FAIRY TALES and LEGENDS by : Various
Jewish folklore overflows with vivid stories that both entertain and teach. In 1919, "Aunt Naomi" (Gertrude Landa) wrote Jewish Fairy Tales and Legends, a book of 27 fairy tales based on stories of the Jewish interpretations of the Bible. While some of the themes are familiar from contemporary fairy tales and folklore, other stories in this collection are infused with the inimitably Jewish struggle for survival and dignity; all are flavoured with a large helping of gentle humour. Jewish Fairy Tales and Legends tells of the boyish exploits of Abraham, Moses, and David, but also includes stories of higgledy-piggledy palaces, beggar kings, quarreling cats and dogs, waterbabes, bogey-men, magic red slippers, a talmudic Sinbad, Alexander the Great, and even the story of a star child. Aunt Naomi strove to create a collection of Jewish delights that boys and girls could add to their treasuries of general fairy-lore and childish romance. In this she succeeded-Jewish Fairy Tales and Legends not only preserves a cultural history, but also is richly entertaining. We invite you to curl up with this unique sliver of Jewish folklore not seen in print for over ninety years; immerse yourself in the tales and fables of yesteryear. A percentage of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated towards education scholarships for underprivileged Jewish youth.
