Synopsis Jeremiah 48 as Christian Scripture by : Julie Woods
"All Scripture is God-breathed" and yet some parts seem rather less God-breathed than one might imagine, or even like. The prophecy concerning Moab in Jeremiah 48 is one such text, since it appears to equate the Lord's work with bloodshed and curses those who withhold their swords. How, if at all, might such a passage inform the Christian community of faith? In this sophisticated study Julie Woods identifies some salient features of Jeremiah's Moab oracle by means of a careful analysis and comparison of both the Septuagint and the Masoretic Text of Jeremiah 48. She also explores the implications of links between the Moab oracles in Jeremiah 48 and Isaiah 15-16. The focus then moves to theological hermeneutics via an examination of some recent Christian interpretations of the oracle (from Walter Brueggemann, Ronald Clements, Terence Fretheim, Douglas Jones, and Patrick Miller). Building on the observations of these scholars and the conclusions reached from her own textual analyses, Woods provides an innovative Christian reading of the oracle (including two imaginative film scripts to bring the text to life). Perhaps one of the more surprising proposals is that Easter is the ultimate horizon of Jeremiah 48.

Synopsis Jeremiah 48 as Christian Scripture by : Julie Woods
An insightful contribution to Old Testament studies, showing how the seemingly bloodthirsty oracle of Jeremiah 48 nevertheless contains a positive Christian reading. Synopsis A Mouth Full of Fire by : Andrew G. Shead
In this New Studies in Biblical Theology volume, Andrew Shead examines Jeremiah's commissioning, embodiment of the word of God, covenant preaching and "oracles of hope." He shows how a differentiation between the divine "word" and the prophet's "words" enables the word of God to function as an organizing center for the book's theology.

Synopsis Jeremiah by : Matthew S. Harmon
The Knowing the Bible series is a resource designed to help Bible readers better understand and apply God's Word. These 12-week studies lead participants through books of the Bible and are made up of four basic components: (1) reflection questions help readers engage the text at a deeper level; (2) "Gospel Glimpses" highlight the gospel of grace throughout the book; (3) "Whole-Bible Connections" show how any given passage connects to the Bible's overarching story of redemption, culminating in Christ; and (4) "Theological Soundings" identify how historic orthodox doctrines are taught or reinforced throughout Scripture. With contributions from an array of influential pastors and church leaders, these gospel-centered studies will help Christians see and cherish the message of God's grace on every page of the Bible. Appointed to be a prophet before he was born, Jeremiah faithfully preached God's Word in the face of confusion, opposition, and persecution. When instructed, he brought the message of God's righteous judgment against sin to the nation of Israel, but not without reminding them of God's covenant faithfulness. In this 12-week study, Matthew Harmon highlights key biblical themes, clarifies crucial doctrines, and draws personal applications from the book of Jeremiah—reminding us of the truth that God's proclamation of judgment is always intended to spur his people to seek salvation in and through him.

Synopsis Violence in the Hebrew Bible by :
In Violence in the Hebrew Bible scholars reflect on texts of violence in the Hebrew Bible, as well as their often problematic reception history. Authoritative texts and traditions can be rewritten and adapted to new circumstances and insights. Texts are subject to a process of change. The study of the ways in which these (authoritative) biblical texts are produced and/or received in various socio-historical circumstances discloses a range of theological and ideological perspectives. In reflecting on these issues, the central question is how to allow for a given text’s plurality of possible and realised meanings while also retaining the ability to form critical judgments regarding biblical exegesis. This volume highlight that violence in particular is a fruitful area to explore this tension.
