It is dedicated to an individual who had a very positive impact on my professional life. The book begins with describing a childhood that began during WWII in extreme poverty and then at the age of 12 immigrating to the US. Became a US citizen and joined the US Navy at 18 and became a Navy Hospital Corpsman (medic). After going to medical X- ray school and working at two US Navy hospitals was transferred to the US Naval Air Facility on the island of Sicily in Italy. Following two tours at Sigonella took a discharge and accepted a civilian position. Shortly after accepting the civilian position a US Navy CDR by the name of Toby Haynsworth took over the Supply Department. Toby had a discussion with me and expressed his concern about my temporary employment status and arranged for me to receive some specialized transportation training and for me to apply for permanent civil service status which I acquired giving me job security. Toby was also a good friend with an American writer who was living in Taormina, Sicily, Eugene Mc Donald Bonner. Mr. Bonner was a North Carolina born-author, composer, music critic, and wayfarer. He also wrote a very interesting book “Roundabout Sicily” describing in detail the history and beauty of this historic island. In addition to publishing a number of songs and chamber works, Mr. Bonner also collaborated with Anatole France to create and opera based upon the Frenchman’s comedy “The Man Who Married a Mute” (“Celui Qui Epousa Un Femme Muette”). It was a pleasure meeting and spending time with such an interesting and talented individual.

In this innovative collaborative ethnography of Italian-Chinese ventures in the fashion industry, Lisa Rofel and Sylvia J. Yanagisako offer a new methodology for studying transnational capitalism. Drawing on their respective linguistic and regional areas of expertise, Rofel and Yanagisako show how different historical legacies of capital, labor, nation, and kinship are crucial in the formation of global capitalism. Focusing on how Italian fashion is manufactured, distributed, and marketed by Italian-Chinese ventures and how their relationships have been complicated by China's emergence as a market for luxury goods, the authors illuminate the often-overlooked processes that produce transnational capitalism—including privatization, negotiation of labor value, rearrangement of accumulation, reconfiguration of kinship, and outsourcing of inequality. In so doing, Fabricating Transnational Capitalism reveals the crucial role of the state and the shifting power relations between nations in shaping the ideas and practices of the Italian and Chinese partners.

This book explores urban life and realities in the cities of the Global South and North. Through literature, film and other forms of media that constitute shared social imaginaries, the essays in the volume interrogate the modes of production that make up the fabric of urban spaces and the lives of their inhabitants. They also rethink practices that engender ‘cityness’ in diverse but increasingly interlinked conglomerations. Probing ‘orientations’ of and within major urban spaces of the South –Jakarta, Rio de Janeiro, Tijuana, Delhi, Kolkata, Luanda and Johannesburg –the book reveals the shared dynamics of urbanity built on and through the ruins of imperialism, Cold War geopolitics, global neoliberalism and the recent resurgence of nationalism. Completing a kind of arc, the volume then turns to cities located in the North such as Paris, Munich, Dresden, London and New York to map their coordinates in relation to the South. The volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of media and culture studies, city studies, development studies, Global South studies, urban geography, built environment and literature.

Introduction One day, years ago Dodie gave me a notebook filled with questions on many subjects. This year early 2003, she invited me to go with her to a writing workshop. I was so inspired that I put down my paintbrush, put my watercolors away and started to answer those questions Dodie had presented to me. What started out to be answers to simple questions drew from my mind memories of so many wonderful people and so many thoughtful experiences from my past that along the way other stories came to be told. I hope those who read these words will enjoy them...

Filling a gap in the literature on the history of sport in Europe, the book brings together complementary studies on diverse aspects of the interrelation between sport and urban space. Going from geography to political science, from sports history to urban and transport history, it suggests a three-fold approach. A first thematic group of researches ranges around "Sport Development and Urban Spaces", exploring the impact of the city on the rise of sport. A second focal point is related to "Sport Policies and Local Identities" with a special attention given to the making of sport venues and competitions in the making of urban identity. A third thematic group includes studies on "Sport Facilities, Engineers and Workers". The articulation of the three parts builds a unique contribution to the process of identity making at a European level. This book was published a sa special issue of the International Journal of the History of Sport.
