We proudly present the proceedings of 1st International Seminar on Cultural Sciences 2020 (ISCS 2020). It focuses on the relation of gender, indigenous people, environment, religion, etc. The issue of culture and development is important today, especially in the time of Covid-19, not only globally, but also Indonesia nationally to the local level. There are several important issues relating to this, both institutionally and the relationships between individuals and groups in supporting the agenda of sustainable development. More than 75 manuscripts were presented at this conference with around 33 of them selected to be published in proceedings. We hope by this conference, discussions on the importance of culture and development will increasingly become an important concern together and bring better response from the government and social relations for development.

This book offers a new perspective into the world of international schools and the lucrative industry that accompanies it. It examines how the notion of the ‘global’ becomes a successful commodity, an important social imaginary and a valuable identity marker for these communities of privileged migrants and host country nationals. The author invites the reader on an ethnographic journey through an international school community located in Germany – illuminating the central features that define and maintain the sector, including its emphasis on ‘globality’, engagement with the concept of ‘Third Culture Kid’, and its wider contentious relationship with the ‘local’. While much attention is placed on ‘global citizenship’, international school communities experience degrees of isolation, limited mobility, over-protection and dependency on the school community– impacting their everyday lives, inside and outside the school. This book is guided by larger questions pertaining to the education and mobilities of ‘migrant’ youths and young adults, as well as the notion of what it means to be ‘global’ today.

International schooling has expanded rapidly in recent years, with the number of students educated in international schools projected to reach seven million by 2023. Drawing on the author's extensive experience conducting research in international schools across the globe, this book critically analyses the concept of international schooling and its rapid growth in the 21st century. It identifies the forces driving this trend, asking to what extent this is an enterprise that meets the needs of a global elite, and examining its relationship to national systems of education. The author demonstrates how wider social inequalities around socio-economic difference, ethnicity, 'race' and gender are reproduced through international schooling and examines the theory that 'international' curricula are in fact Western curricula. This open access book describes and reviews the development of the quality control mechanisms and methodologies associated with IEA’s extensive program of educational research. A group of renowned international researchers, directly involved in the design and execution of IEA’s international large-scale assessments (ILSAs), describe the operational and quality control procedures that are employed to address the challenges associated with providing high-quality, comparable data. Throughout the now considerable history of IEA’s international large-scale assessments, establishing the quality of the data has been paramount. Research in the complex multinational context in which IEA studies operate imposes significant burdens and challenges in terms of the methodologies and technologies that have been developed to achieve the stated study goals. The demands of the twin imperatives of validity and reliability must be satisfied in the context of multiple and diverse cultures, languages, orthographies, educational structures, educational histories, and traditions. Readers will learn about IEA’s approach to such challenges, and the methods used to ensure that the quality of the data provided to policymakers and researchers can be trusted. An often neglected area of investigation, namely the consequential validity of ILSAs, is also explored, examining issues related to reporting, dissemination, and impact, including discussion of the limits of interpretation.
