At this point in my life, I decided to put life's memories together for my family. In 1922, I was born on a farm in the southwest corner of Mahaska County, Iowa. I am now 85 years old and have lived the BEST life! With this book I hope I can pass along some of the highlights of these 85 years! In my mind, all of it has been fun! World War II entered my life in December of 1942. After 30 hours of pilot training I washed out and went to airplane mechanics school in Biloxi, Mississippi. Out of the War in February of '46, on a Friday. Bought a restaurant on Saturday and went to work on Monday-my life has centered around it ever since. I met my wife of 56 years in 1950. Dorene and I had 4 great children and she has a great business sense. Along the way I was in numerous sidelines (wholesale route, bottling works, grocery store, Joe's Short Order in the Chicago Loop). All the way from Bussey, Iowa to Indianola, it's been great. I hope my family and friends will enjoy this story of my life.

Remembering the Irish Revolution chronicles the ways in which the Irish revolution was remembered in the first two decades of Irish independence. While tales of heroism and martyrdom dominated popular accounts of the revolution, a handful of nationalists reflected on the period in more ambivalent terms. For them, the freedoms won in revolution came with great costs: the grievous loss of civilian lives, the brutalisation of Irish society, and the loss of hope for a united and prosperous independent nation. To many nationalists, their views on the revolution were traitorous. For others, they were the courageous expression of some uncomfortable truths. This volume explores these struggles over revolutionary memory through the lives of four significant, but under-researched nationalist intellectuals: Eimar O'Duffy, P. S. On Easter Monday, between 1,000 and 1,500 Irish Volunteers and members of the Irish Citizen Army seized the General Post Office and other key locations in Dublin. The intention of their leaders, including Patrick Pearse and James Connolly, was to end British rule in Ireland and establish an independent thirty-two county Irish republic. For a week battle raged in the Irish capital until the Rising collapsed. The rebel leaders were executed soon afterwards, though in death their ideals quickly triumphed.lluminating every aspect of that fateful Easter week, The Easter Rising is based on an impressive range of original sources. It has been fully revised, expanded and updated in the light of a wealth of new material and extensive use has been made of almost 2,000 witness statements that the Bureau of Military History in Dublin gathered from participants in the Rising. Demonstrates that separatist thinking in Ireland was crucial even when the political focus was on home rule. This book analyses Fenian influences on Irish nationalism between the Phoenix Park murders of 1882 and the Easter Rising of 1916. It challenges the convention that Irish separatist politics before the First World War were marginaland irrelevant, showing instead that clear boundaries between home rule and separatist nationalism did not exist. Kelly examines how leading home rule MPs argued that Parnellism was Fenianism by other means, and how Fenian politics were influenced by Irish cultural nationalism, which reinforced separatist orthodoxies, serving to clarify the ideological distance between Fenians and home rulers. It discusses how early Sinn Fein gave voice to these new orthodoxies, and concludes by examining the ideological complexities of the Irish Volunteers, and exploring Irish politics between 1914 and 1916.
