Synopsis Investigations of Coal Fields in Indiana, North Dakota, and Montana by the United States Geological Survey in 1908 (Classic Reprint) by : G. H. Ashley

Excerpt from Investigations of Coal Fields in Indiana, North Dakota, and Montana by the United States Geological Survey in 1908 The coal measures have a total thickness of approximately feet, of which about feet occurs in Indiana. Of this feet there are 600 feet of barren beds at the top, then a 500-foot interval which contains most of the workable coals, followed in descending order by 200 feet or more of rocks consisting mainly of sandstone. Recent work of David White indicates that the rocks of the upper 600 feet are of post-allegheny age, those of the next 450 feet of Allegheny age, and the lower rocks of Pottsville age. Synopsis Steaming Tests of Coals and Related Investigations by : L. P. Breckenridge

Excerpt from Steaming Tests of Coals and Related Investigations: September 1, 1904, to December 31, 1908 To carry out these investigations the Director of the Geological Survey appointed a committee consisting of E. W. Parker, statistician of the Geological Survey; Joseph A. Holmes, State geologist of North Carolina; and Marius R. Campbell, a geologist of the Geological Survey. Under the first act authorizing this work all of the machinery and coal for the tests was to be furnished the Government free of charge. The buildings containing the testing apparatus were all paid for out of the first appropriation. After the close of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition every Congress made an appropriation for continuing these fuel tests. These subsequent appropriations permitted the purchase of appliances better adapted for the testing work. Synopsis Bulletins, 1908 by : United States Department Of Th Interior

Excerpt from Bulletins, 1908: Nos. 326-328 Need of investigation - Both the Carboniferous and the Tertiary rocks of Arkansas contain extensive deposits of coal, but only those of the older system in a field situated within the valley of Arkansas River and adjacent to the western boundary of the State, have been exploited and are known to the trade. These coals have always borne a high reputation, but the demand for them has greatly increased in recent years. They grade from bituminous to semi anthracite, and comparative experiments at the Geological Survey's fuel-testing plant have shown that coals of as good quality are not found elsewhere in the United States west of West Virginia.0 New uses for them have been found which indicate their importance in the commercial development of the Middle West. At the same time mining operations within the field have demonstrated that its structure is more complex and the known areas of workable coal more limited than the results of earlier surveys would indicate. For these reasons a number of operators and dealers in Arkansas coal called on the United States Geological Survey for more definite information regarding the extent and geologic structure of these coal beds, and in compliance with this demand a detailed reconnaissance investigation of the field was made from March 1 to August 1, 1906, the results of which are embodied in this report. Synopsis The Coal Fields of the United States by : Marius R. Campbell

Excerpt from The Coal Fields of the United States: General Introduction In anticipation of this action the Geological Survey had begun in 1905 the systematic ex amination of coal fields in the public-land States and by 1908 had made sufficient prog ress in that work to issue the first reasonably accurate map of the coal fields Of the country, on a scale of about 120 miles to the inch. In addition to outlining the coal fields, this map differentiates the areas of known coal from the areas that might possibly contain valuable coal and shows also those areas in which the coal-bearing rocks are under deep cover. On this map the coal fields are classified according to the rank of the coals they contain, or at least three great groups are recognized, namely, (1) anthracite, semianthracite, semibituminous, and bituminous coal; (2) subbituminous coal; and (3) lignite. In addition to delineating the coal fields, the map contains an estimate of the tonnage of coal still remaining in the ground and supposedly available for the future needs of the country.
