Synopsis Introduction to Sociology (Classic Reprint) by : Emory S. Bogardus
Excerpt from Introduction to Sociology This edition, it is believed by the writer, represents a distinct advance over the preceding editions. It treats sociology as the scientific study Of group phenomena, of the factors controlling groups, of the different permanent forms and laws of group life, of group control and progress. The principle has been kept to the front throughout the treatise that the chief justification of the existence of any group is found in giving the persons who compose that group the fullest and richest possibilities of developing all their poten tial powers. Another principle of importance has been given a Similar prominence, namely, that the chief justification of the existence of any person is found in giving his life nu selfishly in upbuilding the lives of other persons and groups. Synopsis Introduction to the Study of Sociology (Classic Reprint) by : Edward Cary Hayes
Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of Sociology This is an elementary textbook with the limitations which that fact implies. It is intended for the use of classes and also for general readers who desire a clearer view of the field of thought designated by the much used word sociology. Synopsis An Introductory Sociology (Classic Reprint) by : Kimball Young
Excerpt from An Introductory Sociology Since group life depends on, or really consists in, interaction and contact, it is necessary to study the forms of such action or social processes. These are co-operation and opposition, the latter being divided into competition and con ict. From these develop other processes, such as the division Of labor, the formation of social classes, the settlement of con ict by accommodation, and the merging of persons and groups of divergent cultures into a com mon group with a common culture, the change which we call assimilation. The same interaction looked at from the angle Of the individual determines what is called personality. Personality is that combina tion of ideas, attitudes, and habits which the individual develops as he plays his part within the boundaries Of various groups: fam ily, neighborhood, fraternity, trade union, merchants' association, political party, church body, and so on. Synopsis Introduction to the Science of Sociology (Classic Reprint) by : Robert Ezra Park
Excerpt from Introduction to the Science of Sociology The materials upon which this book is based have been collected from a wide range of sources and represent the observation and reflection of men who have seen life from very different points of view. This was necessary in order to bring into the perspective of a single volume the whole wide range of social organization and human life which is the subject-matter of a science of society. At the same time an effort has been made to bring this material within the limits of a very definite series of sociological conceptions which suggest, at any rate, where they do not clearly exhibit, the fundamental relations of the parts to one another and to the concepts and contents of the volume as a whole. The Introduction to the Science of Sociology is not conceived as a mere collection of materials, however, but as a systematic treatise. On the other hand, the excerpts which make up the body of the book are not to be regarded as mere illustrations. In the context in which they appear, and with the headings which indicate their place in the volume, they should enable the student to formulate for himself the principles involved. An experience of some years, during which this book has been in preparation, has demonstrated the value to the teacher of a body of materials that are interesting in themselves and that appeal to the experience of the student. If students are invited to take an active part in the task of interpretation of the text, if they are encouraged to use the references in order to extend their knowledge of the subject-matter and to check and supplement classroom discussion by their personal observation, their whole attitude becomes active rather than passive. Students gain in this way a sense of dealing at first hand with a subject-matter that is alive and with a science that is in the making. Under these condi tions sociology becomes a common enterprise in which all members of the class participate; to which, by their observation and investiga tion, they can and should make contributions. Synopsis An Introduction to Sociology, for Social Workers, and General Readers (Classic Reprint) by : Joseph John Findlay
Excerpt from An Introduction to Sociology, for Social Workers, and General Readers I dwell on these points of method partly because sociology is a comparatively new study (in spite of the labours of the Sociological Society), partly because young scholars are inclined to be too timid, afraid of mak ing mistakes or of breaking with tradition. And the issue affects that wider circle of readers who are eager to study social questions but hesitate because of their lack, or supposed lack, of qualifications of an academ1e kind. There are many men and women, (those e.g. Associated with the w.e.a. And many others who have not even a remote connection with Universities) whose mental habits are quite consistent with an approach to psychology or sociology, if they can be brought to realize that the subject-matter of these studies lies all round them, and needs only to be selected in the light of large principles. One might go further: for it is now apparent that philosophy can only be created, and re-created, when its roots are spread abroad in the common soil, but to pursue this theme would carry us beyond the range of a preface. Synopsis An Introduction to the Study of Society (Classic Reprint) by : Albion Woodbury Small
Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Society Although this book is the first of its kind, the demand for it has been created by earlier American expounders of social relations. A syllabus of sociological method, printed in 1889 for the use of his students, by one of the authors of this Manual, was mentioned by President E. B. Andrews in a widely circulated article upon the literature of Sociology. From the terms in which numerous readers of the article requested copies of the Introduction, it was apparent that interest in scientific exposition of society was more general than the author had supposed. It is impossible to apportion credit for the new social impulse in the United States, but it is fair to say that the sources of influence most frequently mentioned in the correspondence referred to were the writings of Dr. Samuel W. Dike, Professor Richard T. Ely, and Professor Franklin H. Giddings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis Sociology (Classic Reprint) by : John M. Gillette
Excerpt from Sociology This book pretends to be merely an introduc tion to the study Of sociology. There is nothing Original in it except that it is the formulation and views Of a teacher and student Of the vast field Of sociology. It was prepared to meet the demands of those who have some curiosity about the nature Of society and sociology, but have not a great deal Of time in which to satisfy it. Sufficient references accompany the various chap ters to enable the reader and student to make a larger study Of the subject, and it is hoped that this simple outline will not extinguish any whole some craving for information, but may even whet the appetite for subsequent and more ex tensive investigations. Synopsis Introduction to Rural Sociology (Classic Reprint) by : Paul Leroy Vogt
Excerpt from Introduction to Rural Sociology The practical value of modern attempts to reduce the laws of social organization to a scientific basis has been so thor oughly demonstrated that it no longer needs discussion. Inter est in problems of social organization and effort to understand and solve them have continued to increase as recognition of the value of such effort has grown. Such applied problems as those of the causes and relief of poverty, the adjustment of labor conditions, the equitable distribution of wealth, the social control of the growth of cities and the administration of ai fairs oi state in the larger units, have long received attention. The more recent interest in problems of rural and village life is but an expression of the broadening social point of view, and of the recognition of the fact that human society is, so far as the modern world is concerned, a unity, and that an under standing of rural problems is not only necessary for the sake of the country community but is also necessary as a basis for the explanation of many urban social problems.
