Synopsis The Rational Mechanics of Flexible Or Elastic Bodies 1638 - 1788 by : Leonhard Euler
1 We search the concepts and methods ) of the theory of deformable sonds from GALILEO to LAGRANGE. Neither of them achieved much in our subject, but their works serve as 2 termini: With GALILEO's Discorsi in 1638 our matter begins ) (for this is the history of mathematical theory), while LAGRANGE's Mechanique Analitique closed the mechanics of 1) There are three major historical works that bear on our subject. The first is A history of the theory of elasticity and of the strength of materials by I. ToDHUNTER, "edited and completed" by K. PEARSON, Vol. I, Cambridge, 1886. Unfortunately it is necessary to give warning that this book fails to meet the standard set by the histories ToDHUNTER lived to finish. Much of what ToDHUNTER left seems to be rather the rough notes for a book than the book itself; the parts due to PEARSON are fortunately distinguished by square brackets. Researches prior to 1800 are disposed of in the first chapter, 79 pages long and almost entirely the work of PEARSON; as frontispiece to a work whose title restricts it to theory he saw fit to supply a possibly original pen drawing entitled "Rupture. Sur faces of Cast-Iron".

Synopsis An Introduction to the Theory of Elasticity by : R. J. Atkin
Thanks to intense research activity in the field of continuum mechanics, the teaching of subjects such as elasticity theory has attained a high degree of clarity and simplicity. This introductory volume offers upper-level undergraduates a perspective based on modern developments that also takes into account the limited mathematical tools they are likely to have at their disposal. It also places special emphasis on areas that students often find difficult upon first encounter. An Introduction to the Theory of Elasticity provides an accessible guide to the subject in a form that will instill a firm foundation for more advanced study.

Synopsis Introduction To Mathematical Elasticity by : Leonid P Lebedev
This book provides the general reader with an introduction to mathematical elasticity, by means of general concepts in classic mechanics, and models for elastic springs, strings, rods, beams and membranes. Functional analysis is also used to explore more general boundary value problems for three-dimensional elastic bodies, where the reader is provided, for each problem considered, a description of the deformation; the equilibrium in terms of stresses; the constitutive equation; the equilibrium equation in terms of displacements; formulation of boundary value problems; and variational principles, generalized solutions and conditions for solvability.Introduction to Mathematical Elasticity will also be of essential reference to engineers specializing in elasticity, and to mathematicians working on abstract formulations of the related boundary value problems.

Synopsis Elasticity with Mathematica ® by : Andrei Constantinescu
This book is intended for researchers, engineers and students in solid mechanics, materials science and physics who are interested in using the power of modern computing to solve a wide variety of problems of both practical and fundamental significance in elasticity. Extensive use of Mathematica in the book makes available to the reader a range of recipes that can be readily adjusted to match particular tastes or requirements, to visualize solutions, and to carry out symbolic and numerical analysis and optimization.

Synopsis Introduction to Linear Elasticity by : Phillip L. Gould
This applications-oriented introduction fills an important gap in the field of solid mechanics. Offering a thorough grounding in the tensor-based theory of elasticity for courses in mechanical, civil, materials or aeronautical engineering, it allows students to apply the basic notions of mechanics to such important topics as stress analysis. Further, they will also acquire the necessary background for more advanced work in elasticity, plasticity, shell theory, composite materials and finite element mechanics. This second edition features new chapters on the bending of thin plates, time-dependent effects, and strength and failure criteria.

Synopsis Mathematical Foundations of Elasticity by : Jerrold E. Marsden
Graduate-level study approaches mathematical foundations of three-dimensional elasticity using modern differential geometry and functional analysis. It presents a classical subject in a modern setting, with examples of newer mathematical contributions. 1983 edition.
