Synopsis Intimate Partner Violence by : Samuel R. Aymer
Intimate Partner Violence: Clinical Interventions with Partners and Their Children brings into focus an ecological and clinical frame for addressing the resulting psychological effects of intimate partner violence (IPV). Aymer presents a perspective that is often omitted from social science textbooks which are geared to policy practice, tending to expose students to macro-systemic ideas (including criminal justice policies and procedures) relative to IPV. However, this book expands clinical practice pedagogy by reinforcing the need for students to go beyond macro issues in order to deliver competent clinically-based interventions that help partners and their children work through the consequential effects of partner violence. Designed for graduate students in social work, psychology, gender studies and allied mental health programs, it expands the discourse, arguing that IPV is a complex psycho-social-political-relational problem that must be understood from a multi-theoretical perspective. Through case studies, theory, research, and the author's clinical practice wisdom, this text will: increase understanding of how to work clinically with women affected by IPV, increase knowledge of how to work with abusive men, heighten knowledge of how IPV affects children and adolescents, expand knowledge of social and cultural notions, and explore men's role in terms of advocating against gender-based violence.

Synopsis How He Wins by : Don Hennessy
The World Health Organisation has described the global increase in incidences of domestic abuse due to lockdowns and isolation as a shadow pandemic. Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge, the WHO Regional Director for Europe, has warned that the world could see 31 million cases of gender-based violence if nothing is done, and has called for more action to be taken. This stark warning is an indictment of our failure, in Europe and elsewhere, to reduce the level of male intimate abuse, in spite of the extraordinary energy and dedication of thousands of practitioners and academics. In this challenging book, Don Hennessy examines our practices and procedures, our attitudes and our beliefs, in relation to coercive control. He demonstrates how we have made few inroads in this area – either into the prevalence of male intimate abuse, or in relation to the tactics that support the ability of the male intimate abuser to establish and maintain his control. It is vital that all agencies, both statutory and non-governmental, recognise that we need to change our position from one of support to one of protection. The protection that Hennessy promotes is not that of the physical refuge alone, but the mental safeguard which will allow each target-woman to follow her own intuition. How He Wins, by the best-selling author of Steps to Freedom, focuses in particular on the impact of abuse on the target-woman's family members, and features numerous powerful personal stories. It is essential reading for any woman who has been the target of domestic abuse and has found herself abandoned by the community.

Synopsis International Perspectives on Intimate Partner Violence by : Sandra M. Stith
This book examines international perspectives on intimate partner violence (IPV). It highlights the current state of IPV prevention and intervention efforts across countries, including Colombia, Iran, Russia, China, India, Turkey, Nigeria, the United Kingdom, Finland, and the United States. The book examines the countries of origin in context (e.g., population, area, religion, ethnic diversity) and includes current rates of IPV in each country. In addition, it addresses growth areas and challenges regarding IPV prevention and intervention, including legal issues as well as cultural and social contexts and their relation to IPV – and the clinical interventions used – within each country. The book discusses challenges and opportunities for growth and seeks to gain a more robust and systemic perspective on the global phenomenon of IPV. It examines how larger social, cultural, and global factors affect the lives of the individuals whom family therapists serve and advocate for as well as provide guidance for culturally appropriate clinical and prevention practices. Key areas of coverage include: · International perspectives on intimate partner violence. · Intervention and resources available for victims of intimate partner violence. · Policies and laws relating to intimate partner violence. International Perspectives on Intimate Partner Violence is an essential resource for clinicians, therapists, and practitioners as well as researchers, professors, and graduate students in family studies, clinical psychology, and public health, as well as all interrelated disciplines.

Synopsis LGBTQ Intimate Partner Violence by : Adam M. Messinger
Nationally representative studies confirm that LGBTQ individuals are at an elevated risk of experiencing intimate partner violence. While many similarities exist between LGBTQ and heterosexual-cisgender intimate partner violence, research has illuminated a variety of unique aspects of LGBTQ intimate partner violence regarding the predictors of perpetration, the specific forms of abuse experienced, barriers to help-seeking for victims, and policy and intervention needs. This is the first book that systematically reviews the literature regarding LGBTQ intimate partner violence, draws key lessons for current practice and policy, and recommends research areas and enhanced methodologies.

Synopsis Intimate Partner Violence, Risk and Security by : Kate Fitz-Gibbon
This edited collection addresses intimate partner violence, risk and security as global issues. Although intimate partner violence, risk and security are intimately connected they are rarely considered in tandem in the context of global security. Yet, intimate partner violence causes widespread physical, sexual and/or psychological harm. It is the most common type of violence against women internationally and is estimated to affect 30 per cent of women worldwide. Intimate partner violence has received significant attention in recent years, animating political debate, policy and law reform as well as scholarly attention. In bringing together a range of international experts, this edited collection challenges status quo understandings of risk and questions how we can reposition the risk of IPV, and particularly the risk of IPH, as a critical site of global and national security. It brings together contributions from a range of disciplines and international jurisdictions, including from Australia and New Zealand, United Kingdom, Europe, United States, North America, Brazil and South Africa. The contributions here urge us to think about perpetrators in more nuanced and sophisticated ways with chapters pointing to the structural and social factors that facilitate and sustain violence against women and IPV. Contributors point out that states not only exacerbate the structural conditions producing the risks of violence, but directly coerce and control women as both citizens and non-citizens. States too should be understood as collaborators and facilitators of intimate partner violence. Effective action against intimate partner violence requires sustained responses at the global, state and local levels to end gender inequality. Critical to this end are environmental issues, poverty and the divisions, often along ‘race’ and ethnic lines, underpinning other dimensions of social and economic inequality.

Intimate Partner Sexual Violence (IPSV) is the most common type of sexual violence and a common component of domestic violence, yet most cases go unreported and service responses are often inadequate. This book brings together advice for all those professionals working with individuals who have experienced IPSV and puts forward recommendations to tackle this prevalent form of sexual violence. With contributions from leading experts on IPSV, Intimate Partner Sexual Violence is a comprehensive guide to the subject which bridges the gap between research and practice. Multidisciplinary and international in approach, the book covers key issues salient to all professionals - the impact of IPSV, reproductive coercion, the physical and psychological indicators, possible consequences of taking a case to court, and best practice service responses. One section also addresses the risks and needs of IPSV victims in different contexts, such as those in same-sex or teenage relationships, immigrant victims, and those living in rural areas or in prison. This is an authoritative resource for all professionals who work with IPSV victims including counselors, social workers, refuge workers, victim advocates, mental health professionals, pastoral workers, lawyers, police, and health practitioners.
