The Seoul Agenda: Goals for the Development of Arts Education was unanimously endorsed by all UNESCO Member States in 2011. It is the only existent policy paper of global relevance on arts education. It provided the frame of reference for an international inquiry into arts education experts' perceptions of key issues in the field: access and participation, quality, and the benefits of arts education. Nearly 400 experts from 61 countries around the world participated in this research. The book presents findings, commentaries, and reflections contributed by 51 international scholars and expert practitioners.

Building on earlier discourse, the current yearbook volume continues to focus on questions of research in the field of cultural and arts education from a global perspective. This year's volume opens with a review of important contributions to the World Summit in Arts Education held in Wildbad Kreuth, Germany in 2013. It continues with the topics of evaluation, mapping and monitoring introduced in the first volume. Theoretical and practical applications of the key foundations of work in the International Network for Research in Arts Education (INRAE) are also explored at length. Most notably, new approaches aimed at linking arts education to peace education and the application of these approaches to education for sustainable development (ESD) are introduced and explored.

This yearbook will be the third in an annual series of publications by the International Network for Research in Arts Education (INREA). It will provide a comprehensive survey of contemporary research trends in arts education and will be based on the idea of constructing knowledge in the arts with the wisdom of the many. About sixty scholars from across the world will convey the zeitgeist of the key issues in research in arts education. The volume will be designed as a basic companion for every researcher, student, teacher or artist who wants to know what the recent knowledge of scholars is and what they consider significant. The key issues will reflect the images and the observations that a large body of researchers consider to be essential.

This yearbook is the fourth in an annual series of publications by the International Network for Research in Arts Education (INRAE). INRAE aims to disseminate high quality international research in arts education related to the implementation of UNESCO's 'Seoul Agenda: Goals for the development of arts education'. This yearbook reflects the growing practice around the world of interchanging the terms arts education and cultural education to such an extent that they may eventually be regarded as (nearly) synonymous. We question if there are differences, and how arts and cultural education may be interwoven in different regions of the world. With this in mind we want to reconsider fundamental questions of what arts education is about. Some authors write from a general, more global, perspective, while others are concerned with challenges within one specific art subject or with particular reference to developments in their own country. Overall, the articles analyse and discuss the possibilities and challenges of arts and cultural education around the world.

This book stems from the 2019 meeting of the UNESCO UNITWIN international network for Arts Education Research for Cultural Diversity and Sustainable Development. It presents scholarly, international perspectives on issues surrounding arts education and sustainability that addresses the following questions: What value can the arts add to the education of citizens of the 21st century?; What are the challenges and ways forward to realize the potential of arts education in diverse contexts? Winner of the 2021 Ruth Lovell Murray Book Award Dance Education redefines the nature of dance pedagogy today, setting it within a holistic and encompassing framework, and argues for an approach to dance education from a soci-cultural and philosophical perspective. In the past, dance education has focused on the learning of dance, limited to Western-based societies, with little attention to how dance is learned and applied globally. This book seeks to re-frame the way dance education is defined, approached and taught by looking beyond the privileged Western dance forms to compare education from different cultures. Structured into three parts, this book examines the following essential questions: - What is dance? What defines dance as an art form? - How and where is dance performed and for what purpose? - How do social contexts shape the making and interpretation of dance? The first part covers the history of dance education and its definition. The second part discusses current contexts and applications, including global contexts and the ability to apply and comprehend dance education in a variety of contexts. This book opens up definitions, rather than categorising, so that dance is not presented in a hierarchical form. The third part continues to define dance education in ways that have not been discussed in the past: informal contexts. The book then returns to the original definition of dance education as a way of knowing oneself and the world around us, ending on the philosophical application of this self-knowledge as a way to be in the world and to engage with others, regardless of background. This textbook is a refreshing and much-needed contribution to the field of dance studies by one of the most eminent voices in the field.

In Performative Approaches in Arts Education, researchers, artists and practitioners from philosophy and the arts elaborate on what performative approaches can contribute to 21st century arts education. Introducing new perspectives on learning, the contributors provide a central international perspective, developing a paradigm in which the artist, teacher and researcher’s form of teaching is enmeshed with content, and human agency is entangled with non-human matter. The teaching of the arts and literacy in schools is often at odds with one another. The desire for schools to improve results on high-stakes testing can lead to a narrow view of literacy rather than one that acknowledges the unique and distinct literacies that exist in other curriculum areas including the arts. With methods of communication becoming increasingly complex, it will be more and more important for students to be able to utilise all semiotic modes. Developing Literacy and the Arts in Schools investigates this key issue in education and offers a solution to the negative relationship between the arts and literacy. Drawing on interview data and evidence from diverse classrooms, it explores the pedagogies of effective arts practitioners and teachers, and how they relate to theoretical frameworks, to unpack the key elements of effective practice related to literacy and the arts.
