Synopsis The Pedagogy, Career, and Influence of Dr. Stephen M. Wolfinbarger by : Charles T. West (II)

Dr. Steve Wolfinbarger, professor of music at Western Michigan University, has had an incredible impact on trombone pedagogy over the course of his more than forty-year career. His students play in premier ensembles and teach at over twenty-five colleges and universities domestically and abroad. His teaching has been recognized several times on a local and national stage, including citations from Western Michigan University in 2009, 2010, and 2014, as well as the 2013 Michigan Professor of the Year Award.Wolfinbarger has also been highly involved in the International Trombone Association and International Trombone Festival, helping to shape both into the organizations we see today. He hosted the 1990 International Trombone Workshop, served as president of the ITA from 1994-1996, and continues to serve on numerous committees and boards. The significance of his contributions to the trombone community has been recognized in two of the most prestigious awards given by the International Trombone Association, the ITA Award in 2009 and the Kenneth Hanlon Award in 2019. The bulk of research for this document was done through personal interviews with Dr. Wolfinbarger and correspondence with his former students and professional contacts. The goal of this research is to provide future performers and educators with a better understanding of Wolfinbarger's pedagogical philosophies and techniques, as well as the extent of his influence in the trombone world.

Playing more instruments will also increase your earning potential! The Low Brass Player's Guide to Doubling includes chapters devoted to: tenor trombonists doubling on bass trombone; bass trombonists doubling on tenor trombone; trombonists doubling on euphonium; trombonists doubling on tuba; tuba players doubling on euphonium; euphonium and tuba players doubling on trombone; alto trombone; contrabass trombone; bass trumpet; and cimbasso.
