As we move deeper into the twenty-first century, the forces of globalisation continue to transform both the spaces around international borders, and the social processes, cultural practices, economies, and political dynamics within and between these spaces. The geographies of border regions have undergone a dramatic transformation over the last half century; nation-state boundaries growing ever more porous in many (though not all) areas of the planet. Global trade has become an accepted norm in business transactions almost everywhere. Coupled with the revolution in digital technology, the era of globalisation promises to continue to challenge old ideas, with new approaches to understanding international boundaries and the regions they impact. All of the chapters in this book, mainly drawn from the US-Mexico border (with comparisons to Europe), speak to the ways in which border regions have become important places in their own right, spaces where people live, work, and create art, where corporations invest, where crimes occur, and where security remains a concern. They are, therefore, spaces that need to be better understood and managed, especially in light of the cross-national and global forces impinging upon them. This book was originally published as a special issue of Global Society.

Initially, research in border studies relied mainly on generalizations from cases in the US-Mexico borderlands before subsequently burgeoning in Europe. Border Politics in a Global Era seeks to expand the study further to include the post-colonial South in response to the major challenge of interdisciplinary border studies: to explore borderlands in many contexts, with and across a variety of states, including the so-called developing, post-colonial states. Culled from decades of firsthand observations of borders from around the world and written with a critical and gender lens, the text is framed with attention to history, geography, and the power of films and travelogues to represent people as “others.” Professor Kathleen Staudt advances border concepts, categories, and theories to focus on trade, migration, and security highlighting the importance of states, their length of time since independence, and border bureaucrats’ discretionary practices. Drawing on her Border Inequalities Database for a global perspective, Staudt calls for reducing inequalities and building institutions in the common grounds of borderlands. In a modernist interpretation of migration controls, nation states play a major role. This book challenges this interpretation by showing that comprehensive migration checks and permanent border controls appeared much earlier, in early modern dynastic states and empires, and predated nation states by centuries. The 11 contributions in this volume explore the role of early modern and modern dynastic kingdoms and empires in Europe, the Middle East and Eurasia and the evolution of border controls from the 16th to the 20th century. They analyse how these states interacted with other polities, such as emerging nations states in Europe, North America and Australia, and what this means for a broader reconceptualization of mobility in Europe and beyond in the longue durée. Predictions that globalization would undermine territorial attachments and weaken the sources of territorial conflict have not been realized in recent decades. Globalization may have produced changes in territoriality and the functions of borders, but it has not eliminated them. The contributors to this volume examine this relationship, arguing that much of the change can be attributed to sources other than economic globalization. Bringing the perspectives of law, political science, anthropology, and geography to bear on the complex causal relations among territoriality, conflict, and globalization, leading contributors examine how territorial attachments are constructed, why they have remained so powerful in the face of an increasingly globalized world, and what effect continuing strong attachments may have on conflict. They argue that territorial attachments and people's willingness to fight for territory depends upon the symbolic role it plays in constituting people's identities, and producing a sense of belonging in an increasingly globalized world.

Frontiers and territorial borders are places of contested power where societies collide, interact, and interconnect. Using bioanthropological case studies from around the world, this volume explores how people in the past created, maintained, or changed their identities while living on the edge between two or more different spheres of influence. Examining a wide range of borderland settings, essays in this volume discuss the mobility of people in Roman Egypt and investigate patterns of genetic difference in Iron Age Italy. They show how social and cultural interactions helped buffer the stressful physical environment of eleventh-century Iceland and describe bioarchaeological evidence of traumatic injuries indicating tension across regional borders in the precontact American Great Basin and Southwest. Contributors look at isotope data, skeletal stress markers, craniometric and dental metric information, mortuary arrangements, and other evidence to examine how frontier life can affect health and socioeconomic status. Illustrating the many meanings and definitions of frontiers and borderlands, they question assumptions about the relationships between people, place, and identity. As national borders continue to ignite controversy in today’s society and politics, the research presented here is more important than ever. The long history of people who have lived in borderland areas helps us understand the challenges of adapting to these dynamic and often violent places. This volume contains contributions from twenty-four scholars concerning the significance and implications of the world’s borderlands in economic, political, and socio-cultural contexts. Together these essays explore the changing role of borders in a global world. Are borders increasingly irrelevant under conditions of globalization, or can a case be made to demonstrate their continuing importance at various levels of spatial activity? Situating itself within a growing border literature, Holding the Line argues that contemporary borders facilitate parallel processes of globalization and localization of political activity. As such, the essays adopt a holistic approach to understanding the impact of boundaries on both society and space. They demonstrate that any attempt to create a methodological and conceptual framework for the understanding of boundaries must be concerned with the process of bounding, rather than simply the means through which the physical lines of separation are delimited and demarcated. This approach renders the notion of a "borderless world" highly problematic, because the latter ignores the important and ongoing relationship between the functional role of borders in the bounding process, and the symbolic role of borders as imagined social, political, and economic constructions embedded within a geographical text. The changing characteristics of political boundaries during an era of globalization has become a great focus of interdisciplinary study, and this book will appeal to scholars of political geography, border studies, and international relations.
