Synopsis Intelligent Materials, Second International Conference Proceedings by : Craig A. Rogers
The key science and technology challenges which will facilitate the transition from a "make do and mend" philosophy inevitably restricting the degree of intelligence which can be engineered and the "designer materials systems" philosophy which is the ultimate goal are considered. The longer term vision will need to accord much more closely with nature's design paradigms, with control at the molecular, nano, micro and macro level of synthesis and assembly, of active self repair materials systems in function shapes.

Synopsis Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Structural Stability and Dynamics by : G. R. Liu
ICSSD 2002 is the second in the series of International Conferences on Structural Stability and Dynamics, which provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and experiences in structural stability and dynamics among academics, engineers, scientists and applied mathematicians. Held in the modern and vibrant city of Singapore, ICSSD 2002 provides a peep at the areas which experts on structural stability and dynamics will be occupied with in the near future. From the technical sessions, it is evident that well-known structural stability and dynamic theories and the computational tools have evolved to an even more advanced stage. Many delegates from diverse lands have contributed to the ICSSD 2002 proceedings, along with the participation of colleagues from the First Asian Workshop on Meshfree Methods and the International Workshop on Recent Advances in Experiments and Computations on Modeling of Heterogeneous Systems. Forming a valuable source for future reference, the proceedings contain 153 papers ? including 3 keynote papers and 23 invited papers ? contributed by authors from all over the world who are working in advanced multi-disciplinary areas of research in engineering. All these papers are peer-reviewed, with excellent quality, and cover the topics of structural stability, structural dynamics, computational methods, wave propagation, nonlinear analysis, failure analysis, inverse problems, non-destructive evaluation, smart materials and structures, vibration control and seismic responses. The major features of the book are summarized as follows: a total of 153 papers are included with many of them presenting fresh ideas and new areas of research; all papers have been peer-reviewed and are grouped into sections for easy reference; wide coverage of research areas is provided and yet there is good linkage with the central topic of structural stability and dynamics; the methods discussed include those that are theoretical, analytical, computational, artificial, evolutional and experimental; the applications range from civil to mechanical to geo-mechanical engineering, and even to bioengineering.

Synopsis Proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Electrorheological Fluids and Magnetorheological Suspensions by : Faramarz Gordaninejad
ERMR 2006 included invited speakers, technical presentations, poster presentations, and a student paper competition. At the conference banquet, Dr. David Carlson of Lord Corporation addressed the conference attendees and gave a stirring speech on the history of ER and MR fluids, as well as current and future applications. A unique feature of the ERMR Conferences is that they comprehensively cover issues ranging from physics to chemistry to engineering applications of ER and MR materials held in a general session to enhance the interaction between the scientists and engineers. The sessions in ERMR 2006 were organized based into two Symposia: a) Materials and b) Applications. Topics covered in the Materials Symposium included: mechanisms, preparation, and characterization of ER and MR materials. Topics covered in the Applications Symposium included: ER and MR devices, control systems, system integration, and applications. This structure was implemented in order to enable interaction between attending scientists and engineers in both the Materials Symposium and the Applications Symposium, and to enhance the free flow of ideas, and the potential collaborative research opportunities. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Transient Behavior of Electrorheological Fluids in Shear Flow (471 KB). Contents: The Physical Mechanism to Reduce Viscosity of Liquid Suspensions (R Tao); Polar Molecular Type Electrorheological Fluids (K Lu et al.); Yield Stress in Ferrofluids? (H Shahnazian & S Odenbach); The Effect of Dwell Time on the Rheological Behavior of MR Fluids (M Ahmadian & F D Goncalves); The Methods of Measuring Shear Stress of Polar Molecule Dominated ER Fluids (R Shen et al.); Electrosensitive Lubricants (E V Korobko et al.); Study on Characteristics of an Electrorheological Fluid Coupling (Y Meng et al.); On the Control of a MR Torque Transfer Device (M H Elahinia et al.); Comparison of ERF Clutch Designs (D J Ellam et al.); Examination of Throughflow in a Radial ERF Clutch (S M Chen et al.); Two-Layered Magnetic Fluid Sloshing in a Rectangular Container (S Yoshida et al.); Design of the High-Performance MR Brake and Its Characteristics (T Kikuchi et al.); and other papers. Readership: Mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, physicists, chemists, chemical engineers and materials scientists.

Synopsis Emerging Materials for Civil Infrastructure by : Roberto A. Lopez-Anido
Prepared by the Emerging Materials Committee of the Materials Division of ASCE. This report presents a review of the state of the art on emerging materials for use in civil engineering infrastructure. Emerging materials include novel and new materials, as well as traditional materials with profound potential in new applications. A material or class of materials is considered "emerging" if its use has not yet progressed to a stage wherein well-established guidelines, codes, and specifications exist for its use. This report is conveniently divided into chapters that address specific classes of materials andØhighlight the most recent developments in materials technologies relevant to civil infrastructure.Ø Topics include: smart materials for civil engineering applications; fiber reinforced composites in civil infrastructure; emerging geomaterials for ground improvement; aluminum materials and the infrastructure; polymer concrete made with recycled plastics; state of the practice in asphalt technology; emerging uses for masonry materials; and emerging uses for window glass. The practicing engineer, student, or general reader will find this to be an easy-to-use reference for construction material systems that are being developed for use in civil engineering.
