Synopsis Instructional Design Competencies by : Dennis C. Fields
In 1986, the International Board of Standards for Training, Performance, and Instruction (IBSTPI) published the first edition of "Instructional Design [ID] Competencies: The Standards." It was the culmination of work that began in 1978. In this third edition, IBSTPI presents its latest view of the competencies of instructional designers. It is a greatly expanded view that reflects the complexities of current practice and technology, theoretical advancements, and the social tenor of the times. The level of proficiency described in the 1986 Competencies was taken to represent an instructional designer who would probably have at least three years of experience in the field beyond entry-level training. The current revision takes this notion considerably further in two ways. First, it discriminates between the essential and the advanced levels. Second, it discriminates between competencies which are universally recognized as required of all practitioners and those which have broad but not universal support. The current edition has added a section called "Professional Foundations." This section explicitly recognizes the importance of a knowledge base for ID and the professional responsibility practitioners have for career-long learning and update of that knowledge base. This recognition of knowledge as a foundation to practice was left implicit in the first version. The current revision has also found a way to recognize the importance of technological competence for the practitioner while continuing to recognize both the volatility and the context-specificity of expertise with any particular technology. The section now called "Implementation and Management" represents a considerable strengthening of the intent of the original. This represents both a better awareness of the role these competencies play in ID and also the increasing importance of ID in the success of knowledge-based enterprises, especially in business environments. Chapters are: (1) "Instructional Design Competence"; (2) "The 2000 IBSTPI Instructional Design Competencies"; (3) "The ID Competencies: Discussion and Analysis"; (4) "The Role and Use of ID Competencies"; (5) "The Competencies and ID Specialization"; and (6) "The Competency Validation Research." Appendices include the 1986 ID Competencies and Performance Statements, a glossary, bibliography, IBSTPI Code of Ethical Standards for Instructional Designers, and list of organizations participating in Competency validation. (Contains 48 references.) (AEF)

Synopsis Instructional Development for Individualized Learning in Higher Education by : Robert M. Diamond
Abstract: A practical guide to instructional development for individual learning for university administrators, faculty members, and students involved in academic innovation emphasizes specific procedures and actual experiences, rather than theories and hypothetical examples. The 7 text chapter present information and guidelines concerning the basic elements of a sucessful individualized instruction program; requirements for organizational changes in academic philosophy; basic design inputs, project development, and the establishment of the instructional operational sequence; design and implementation of evaluation instruments and procedures; the instructional evaluation component and the intrepretation of evaluation data; cost-effectiveness and accountability (exemplified by a case study); and the current status of and prospects for individualized higher education. Information on institutional policies with respect to the use of copyrightable materials, royalties, and on the logistics, hardware, and budgeting in independent learning facilities, are appended. Synopsis Teaching Higher Education to Lead by : Sam Choon-Yin
Competition to provide education is tense, attributed to the ease to access and process information. Technological development has also landed a terrible blow to the employment situation, which forces higher education institutions to review what and how their students learn. Yet, the desire to retain and grow the number of students and gain commercially can sometimes cloud judgment of educational leaders. They need to know that poorly made decisions hurt the businesses and students. In this book, Sam Choon-Yin explores how technological development has the potential to transform higher education. However, the same technology also has the potential to disrupt the education sector. The author provides a critical outlook on the prevailing practices of the higher education institutions. By drawing our attention to the various challenges, the author shows how teaching and learning can be effectively carried out in the digital age to serve the needs of students and hiring companies, and ultimately the institutions of higher learning. Understanding the issues and challenges means better design of and delivery of the curriculum. At a deeper level, the book raises a complex question of “what makes an education institution different” as they aim to define themselves by fulfilling students’ desire. Understanding these issues forms the basis of power for higher education institutions to remain competitive and relevant in the age of digitization.

Synopsis Instructional Design: Case Studies in Communities of Practice by : Keppell, Michael J.
Instructional designers hold the responsibility of selecting, sequencing, synthesizing, and summarizing unfamiliar content to subject matter experts. To successfully achieve legitimate participation in communities of practice, instructional designers need to utilize a number of communication strategies to optimize the interaction with the subject matter expert. Instructional Design: Case Studies in Communities of Practice documents real-world experiences of instructional designers and staff developers who work in communities of practice. Instructional Design: Case Studies in Communities of Practice explains the strategies and heuristics used by instructional designers when working in different settings, articulates the sophistication of communication strategies when working with subject matter experts, and provides insight into the range of knowledge, skills, and personal characteristics required to complete the tasks expected ofthem.

Synopsis Rethinking Teaching in Higher Education by : Alenoush Saroyan
This book is intended for faculty and faculty developers, as well as for deans, chairs, and directors responsible for promoting teaching and learning in higher education. Intentionally non-technical, it engages readers reflectively with a process for developing teaching and details the planning necessary to apply this process to teaching within disciplines. The book centers on McGill University’s week-long Course Design and Teaching Workshop that the contributors have offered together for more than ten years. It follows the five day format of the workshop–covering the analysis of course content, conceptions of learning, the selection of appropriate teaching strategies, the evaluation of student learning, and evaluation of teaching–in a way that reflects the spontaneity of the debates it has engendered and the workshop’s evolutionary changes. The structure shows faculty members conceptualizing new courses or re-examining their teaching of existing courses, and translating the insights gained from the workshop to specific disciplinary content and learning outcomes. In addition four previous participants of the workshop write about its influence on their personal thinking about the practice of teaching. The final two chapters describe the structure and evolving role of McGill’s Centre for University Teaching and Learning. The authors describe its objectives in fostering an evidence-based teaching culture and providing a practical support structure with limited resources. They highlight achievements in disseminating teaching expertise across their campus, and their vision for the future role of faculty development. This book provides faculty developers and administrators with valuable non-prescriptive models and challenging ideas that promote faculty development in general and university teaching in particular. It engages faculty members in the process of course design in a way that is learning centered and can lead to deep student learning.

Synopsis Universal Design in Higher Education by : Sheryl E. Burgstahler
Universal Design in Higher Education looks at the design of physical and technological environments at institutions of higher education; at issues pertaining to curriculum and instruction; and at the full array of student services. Universal Design in Higher Education is a comprehensive guide for researchers and practitioners on creating fully accessible college and university programs. It is founded upon, and contributes to, theories of universal design in education that have been gaining increasingly wide attention in recent years. As greater numbers of students with disabilities attend postsecondary educational institutions, administrators have expressed increased interest in making their programs accessible to all students. This book provides both theoretical and practical guidance for schools as they work to turn this admirable goal into a reality. It addresses a comprehensive range of topics on universal design for higher education institutions, thus making a crucial contribution to the growing body of literature on special education and universal design. This book will be of unique value to university and college administrators, and to special education researchers, practitioners, and activists.
