Defender of the Crown With Tak’s winning streak cut short by Kyle Sudoh of Team Emperor, it’s up to Ry Takahashi to defend the honor of Gunma against the invading Lancer Evo squad. But even Ry admits that Kyle drives an unbeatable car. Out of the spotlight, Tak’s father installs a new engine in the Eight Six, however Tak’s mind is addled with images of Natalie and her older suitor. But where one romance grows bitter, another grows sweet. Iggy’s love life looks up when a girl from a neighboring prefecture catches his eye. And it just so happens that her brother drives a certain, very exciting car.

Proving that passing Daiki was no fluke, Tak wins his race. Now it’s up to K.T. to keep up the momentum as he takes on Toudou’s ”Smiley” Sakai. They call the guy ”Smiley,” because in the heat of battle his face scrunches up into what might be deceptively described as a grin. Sakai’s smile quickly fades, though, when K.T. beats him in their race. After this defeat a long absent member of the Toudou team comes back to defend the team’s sullied reputation... a member so tough that even Kyoichi calls Ryosuke to warn him.

The spirit of the White Comet is as strong as ever, but can even the reinvigorated Ry Takahashi take down the Phantom Eight Six that, to this point, has remained unbeatable? The answer will change the face of Gunma racing forever. And if Tak does end up besting the best of Gunma, he’ll have to face the question posed by his best friend Iggy … “What’s next?” Any way you look at it, things are looking up for the Speed Stars, especially for their leader, Cole, who may yet fulfill his dream of meeting a woman with whom he can share his racing ambitions … even if she is a member of a rival team.

The hillclimb has begun, and the race is on between Keisuke and Spiral’s Ikeda! It quickly becomes apparent that the competition is not only between two talented drivers, but between two philosophies. On one side, Ikeda is sure Zero Theory will prove superior, while Keisuke puts Ryosuke's own High-Speed Street Theory to the test. Which theory will be the miracle-maker these drivers will need to win when Hakone's infamous Devil's Fog reduces visibility to almost nil?
