Synopsis In Defense of Magical Thinking: Essays in Defiance of Conformity to Reason by : Jack Preston King
Do arrogant Twitter atheists make your blood boil? When Richard Dawkins, the Amazing Randi, or Bill Nye the Science Guy smugly tell you how stupid you are for believing in God, or psychic powers, or ghosts, or the afterlife, or even your own immortal soul, do you want to just reach through the screen and strangle them? You're going to love this book.Jack Preston King is not an apologist for any one religion or spiritual path. He's a defender of the human spiritual impulse in all its forms. In these 25 rollicking essays, King makes the case for both the reality and importance of spiritual experience, citing Jungian and Cognitive psychology, neuroscience, shamanism, Taoism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Sufism, Pentecostal Christianity, Wicca, philosophers from Aristotle to Plato to Hume to Nietzsche, quantum physics, and even pop culture icons Philip K. Dick and the Face on Mars. Read this book, and the next time some jerk on Twitter says magic isn't real, and human beings are soulless, chemically-driven animals inhabiting a dead, material universe, you'll be armed and ready to make your stand In Defense of Magical Thinking.

Synopsis The King and Commoner Tradition by : Mark Truesdale
King and Commoner tales were hugely popular across the late medieval and early modern periods, their cultural influence extending from Robin Hood ballads to Shakespearean national histories. This study represents the first detailed exploration of this rich and fascinating literary tradition, tracing its development across deeply politicized fifteenth-century comic tales and early modern ballads. The medieval King and Commoner tales depict an incognito king becoming lost in the forest and encountering a disgruntled commoner who complains of class oppression and poaches the king’s deer. This is an upside-down world of tricksters, violence, and politicized feasting that critiques and deconstructs medieval hierarchy. The commoners of these tales utilize the inversion of the medieval carnival, crowning themselves as liminal mock kings in the forest while threatening to rend and devour a body politic that would oppress them. These tales are complex and ambiguous, reimagining the socio-political upheaval of the late medieval period in sophisticated ruminations on class relations. By contrast, the early modern ballads and chapbooks see the tradition undergo a conservative metamorphosis. Suppressing its more radical elements amid a celebration of proto-panoptical kings, the tradition remerges as royalist propaganda in which the king watches his thankful subjects through the keyhole.

Synopsis King of the Rising by : Kacen Callender
King of the Rising is the searing conclusion to an unflinching and powerful Caribbean-inspired fantasy series about colonialism, resilience, and defiance. A revolution has swept through the islands of Hans Lollik and former slave Loren Jannik has been chosen to lead the survivors in a bid to free the islands forever. But the rebels are running out of food, weapons, and options. And as the Fjern inch closer to reclaiming Hans Lollik with every battle, Loren is faced with a choice that could shift the course of the revolution in their favor -- or doom it to failure. Praise for Islands of Blood and Storm: "A powerful look at colonialism, oppression, and rebellion, and all that it can cost the individuals involved." —Library Journal (starred review) "The book's absorbing setting, captivating lead, and relevant themes of race and class complement each other with alternating delicacy and savagery."—NPR Books "King of the Rising puts readers firmly into the minds of Callender’s unforgettable characters as it answers a spine-tingling set of questions: At the end of the war, who will survive and who will rule?” —BookPage Islands of Blood and Storm Queen of the Conquered King of the Rising
