Synopsis Images from the Region of the Pueblo Indians of North America by : Aby M. Warburg
Aby M. Warburg (1866–1929) is recognized not only as one of the century’s preeminent art and Renaissance historians but also as a founder of twentieth-century methods in iconology and cultural studies in general. Warburg’s 1923 lecture, first published in German in 1988 and now available for the first time in English translation, Michael Steinberg offers offers at once a window on his career, a formative statement of his cultural history of modernity, and a document in the ethnography of the American Southwest. This edition includes thirty-nine photographs, many of them originally presented as slides with the speech, and a rich interpretive essay by the translator. Images from the Region of the Pueblo Indians of North America translates Warburg’s seminal study of the “serpent ritual” of the Hopi people, which grew out of a trip to the American Southwest undertaken by Warburg in 1895–1896.

Synopsis Images of the North by : Sverrir Jakobsson
This interdisciplinary volume seeks to examine and explore the various issues surrounding image construction, identity making and representations of the North, as well as the interconnectedness between those issues. The aim is to elucidate the multiple aspects of the idea of the North, both as a mythological space and a discursive system created and shaped by cultures outside the North as well as from within. The objective of the research project Iceland and Images of the North is to elucidate several aspects of images of the North and to explore their functions in the present, focusing especially on Iceland. What effect have Iceland and its people had on images of the North, and how do those images influence the Icelanders and other nations? The project will be a cooperative, interdisciplinary undertaking by researchers in the humanities and social sciences.

Synopsis Lincoln County, North Carolina by : Jason Harpe
Situated in North Carolina's historic piedmont region, Lincoln County possesses some of the Tar Heel State's most picturesque scenery: the shoreline of Lake Norman on its eastern boundary, the winding path of the Catawba River, and the rolling foothills across the countryside. Within this beautiful setting, early pioneering families established homes and communities as early as the 1700s, and since that time, the county has grown and developed, both socially and economically, yet has been able to maintain its small-town charm and character. This volume, containing over 200 black-and-white images, invites readers to experience a Lincoln County of decades and centuries past, a time marked by frontier spirit, dusty main streets, early merchants who carried all the necessities, and a slower pace of life. Lincoln County explores the personal side of the county's history, showcasing everyday life in Lincolnton and the smaller rural communities, such as Pumpkin Center, Triangle, Iron Station, Lowesville, and Denver. From parades and farmers' day celebrations in downtown Lincolnton, to group portraits of turn-of-the-century children and athletes at various early schoolhouses, such as the Mary Wood School and S. Ray Lowder School, to scenes of troops leaving for a variety of wartime service, these images document the everyday struggles, challenges, and achievements that Lincoln Countians faced and endured over the years.

Synopsis North Sacramento by : V. Ehrenreich-Risner
In 1910, the North Sacramento Land Company purchased 3,339 acres to establish the city of North Sacramento. Three years later, Del Paso and Company set up power and water operations, along with rail transport. A police and fire department and school sealed the deal, and the city incorporated on June 18, 1924. In this idyllic hometown, parents allowed their kids to walk "the Boulevard" unattended, skate at Iceland, and cool off in Woodlake Pool, after they stopped in at Li'l Joe's or Sammy's for a bite or a donut at Hoyt's. The city thrived with characters like Mama Marks, Mayor Olga Roth, and entrepreneur Betty "Boop" Bryan. Pugilist Max Baer sparred in the open-air theater before the screen came down to the sawdust floor for a Tom Mix movie.

Synopsis North Caddo Parish by : Sam Collier
In 1835, the United States purchased close to one million acres of land from the Caddo Confederacy of Native Americans; the Louisiana portion became known as Caddo Parish. The Indian agency's protection of that land delayed the settlement of the parish for 25 years or more after it began in other parts of Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas. The Red River logjam that existed for a few hundred years backed up bayous, which in return created navigable streams and lakes. The uplands contained massive stands of virgin timbers and bountiful fruit, berries, fish, and game. The first land patents were sold in 1841, and by 1850, the area was known as Caddo Prairie. For a majority of the next 100 years, steamboat traffic, homesteaders, plantations, subsistence farmers, logging operations, entrepreneurs, and a building boom brought on by the railroad and oil industries uniquely melded to define local, cultural history. Today three towns and five villages are located in north Caddo Parish, while the memories of 10 historic communities remain strong.

Synopsis North Olmsted by : Dale Thomas
North Olmsted's history began in 1815 with David Johnson Stearns of Vermont. Stearns was followed to the area by other pioneers from New England, and they established a settlement in the wilderness of southwestern Cuyahoga County. North Olmsted went from being an isolated farming community to a village in 1908 and then to a city in 1951. The stage was then set for it to rapidly grow into a thriving suburb in the last half of the 20th century. North Olmsted's rich heritage is illustrated in this book through historic photographs from the Olmsted Historical Society that highlight the city's residents, businesses, social centers, and schools.
