Synopsis Identifying the Core Content and Structure of a Schema for Cultural Understanding by : Joan R. Rentsch
"Multicultural perspective taking skills enable Army leaders to adapt quickly when encountering individuals or groups from unfamiliar cultures and to function effectively in multinational alliances. In previous research, a schema for cultural understanding was identified as a key component of multicultural perspective taking. The primary objective for the present research was to identify core content and structure of a schema for cultural understanding that can be used to inform training for Soldiers deploying to unfamiliar cultures. Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, we extracted schema content through interviews and identified common themes and concepts. This process resulted in schema content consisting of attributes of culture, goals in using cultural knowledge, and tactics for cultural learning. Findings indicate that concepts of religion, values and beliefs, and customs or traditions are central attributes of cultural understanding. These findings can inform training development and guide further research on the skills needed to function effectively in multicultural environments. Whereas traditional cultural awareness training typically focuses on understanding members of a specific culture or country, augmenting this training by focusing on a schema for cultural understanding developed through practical experience will afford Army leaders broader cultural capability. Synopsis The Cambridge Handbook of Intercultural Training by : Dan Landis
With the number of international migrants globally reaching an estimated 272 million (United Nations report, September 2019), the need for intercultural training is stronger than ever. Since its first edition, this handbook has evaluated the methodologies and suggested the best practice to develop effective programs aimed at facilitating cross-cultural dialogue and boosting the economic developments of the countries mostly affected by migration. This handbook builds and expands on the previous editions by presenting the rational and scientific foundations of intercultural training and focuses on unique approaches, theories, and areas of the world. In doing so, it gives students, managers, and other professionals undertaking international assignments a theoretical foundation and practical suggestions for improving intercultural training programs.

Synopsis Understanding Context in Language Use and Teaching by : Éva Illés
This book is a guide to understanding and applying the essential, heretofore elusive, notion of context in language study and pedagogy. Éva Illés offers a new, critical, systematic theoretical framework, then applies that framework to practical interactions and issues in communicative language teaching rooted in English as a Lingua Franca. By linking theory and practice for research and teaching around the world, this book brings a new awareness of how context can be conceptualised and related to language pedagogy to advanced students, teachers, teacher educators and researchers of language teaching, applied linguistics and pragmatics.

Synopsis Routledge Handbook of Research Methods in Military Studies by : Joseph Soeters
This volume offers an overview of the methodologies of research in the field of military studies. As an institution relying on individuals and resources provided by society, the military has been studied by scholars from a wide range of disciplines: political science, sociology, history, psychology, anthropology, economics and administrative studies. The methodological approaches in these disciplines vary from computational modelling of conflicts and surveys of military performance, to the qualitative study of military stories from the battlefield and veterans experiences. Rapidly developing technological facilities (more powerful hardware, more sophisticated software, digitalization of documents and pictures) render the methodologies in use more dynamic than ever. The Routledge Handbook of Research Methods in Military Studies offers a comprehensive and dynamic overview of these developments as they emerge in the many approaches to military studies. The chapters in this Handbook are divided over four parts: starting research, qualitative methods, quantitative methods, and finalizing a study, and every chapter starts with the description of a well-published study illustrating the methodological issues that will be dealt with in that particular chapter. Hence, this Handbook not only provides methodological know-how, but also offers a useful overview of military studies from a variety of research perspectives. This Handbook will be of much interest to students of military studies, security and war studies, civil-military relations, military sociology, political science and research methods in general.

Synopsis Advancing Innovation and Sustainable Outcomes in International Graduate Education by : Gurubatham, Mohan Raj
The allocation of resources in international universities to adopt and institutionalize solutions must be prioritized above obsolete or wasteful practices. Changing economic and social cultures necessitate new and advancing educational strategies for the promotion of graduate student success. Advancing Innovation and Sustainable Outcomes in International Graduate Education is a critical scholarly resource that examines the impact of such drivers as technology and the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the need for a new approach to learning that directly impacts the teaching-learning process. Among the drivers that the book examines are the need for higher order and critical thinking, the need for developing cognitive and emotional intelligence with fluid intelligence enabling broad interdisciplinary thinking and wisdom, and the shifting values of millennials concerning the need for new approaches to education and attitudes to work. Underpinning the theme and chapters of this book is the need for ecosystemic thinking for sustainability framed from consciousness-based education. Featuring a wide range of topics such as data analytics, emotional intelligence, and workplace innovation, this book is ideal for educators, researchers, policymakers, curriculum designers, administrators, managers, academicians, and students.
