Synopsis Ice Cold Killers - The Rituals of Murderers by : World History
From singling out victims at bus stops, targeting women with long, blonde hair, saving trophies, or dismembering and even eating their victims, each serial killer set a unique ritual for their murder, and these rituals are what betrays them in the end. Serial killers often begin with a few unplanned murders, where they experiment with which actions give them the greatest release. Moving on they start to carefully select their victims, either by stalking them or staking out special locations where their victim – such as prostitute or child – can be found alone. But after a while the killer's hunt for satisfaction makes him overconfident. Follow on the heels of the police in their hunt for four relentless serial killers. These stories contain gruesome details and are not suitable for children.

Synopsis Ice Cold Killers - Addicted to Death by : World History
What makes a serial killer? There is a huge difference between killers who kill once in the heat of the moment, mass murderers who slaughter many people at once, and serial killers who follow a specific pattern to kill carefully selected victims. A serial killer is an ice-cold predator who enjoys the hunt, is driven by ritual or a particular impulse, and who becomes increasingly dependent on the release that the murder provides. A serial killer’s brain demands multiple victims. German killer Volker Eckert was morbidly obsessed with women’s long hair. Jeffrey Dahmer achieved sexual release by dismembering people and eating selected pieces. Alexander Pichushkin was preoccupied with chess and decided to murder 64 people, one per square on a chessboard. Finally, David Berkowitz believed that demons ordered him to kill. The stories told here reveal what drives serial killers and how they carry out their murders. The content is violent and gruesome and certainly not for children.

Synopsis Ritual by : Paul v Walters
London 2023. A sadistic serial killer is on the loose. Dragged out of retirement, DCI Moore returns to the Met in a bid to apprehend a deranged psychopathic killer. A particular chess piece is left behind at each crime scene, mirroring the slain victim’s profession. Moore’s off-sider, DS Anderson, realises the killer selects his victims based on a particular chess move. However, the perpetrator, with meticulous planning and staging of his kills, is also following a sacred, sacrificial ritual that keeps him one step ahead in the “game.” Moore, desperate to achieve a result, is frustrated by the internal politics and glacial pace of the investigation. The momentum begins to move at breakneck speed when the killer ups the ante with two more slayings. Chillingly, the investigators discover the killer has chosen one of their own as his final victim. Ritual is a novel full of twists and turns, which will keep readers fascinated until the last page. “Promises a wild and exciting ride and delivers in spades.” – Michael Jacobsen, News Ltd., Australia “Walters’ storytelling offers a gripping tale of suspense and intrigue sure to keep the reader captivated.” – Gold Coast Bulletin, Australia “A must for anyone who loves a great thriller.” – Alana Woods, freelance reviewer for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Australian

Synopsis Myth and Ritual in Women's Detective Fiction by : Christine A. Jackson
The relationship between traditional myths, fairytales and current fiction novels featuring women as crime-solvers is examined in this critical study. Using theories from Joseph Campbell, C.G. Jung and others, the author asserts that plots and imagery in these novels conform to quest narratives outlined in classical myths and traditional fairytales. Narcissus, Medusa, Orpheus and Orestes are a few of the figures emerging in today's mystery fiction. Among the mystery authors discussed are Patricia Cornwell, Amanda Cross, Sue Grafton, P.D. James, Sara Paretsky and Julie Smith. After establishing the anatomy of a mystery, the text discusses many myths, rituals and rites associated with mysteries, including myths of identity, religion and rites of initiation.

Synopsis An End to Murder by : Colin Wilson
Human beings have always been cruel, savage, and murderous. Is that all about to change? Human history can be seen as a catalog of coldhearted murders, mindless blood feuds, appalling massacres, and devastating wars. Creatively and intellectually, there is no other species that has ever come close to equaling humanity’s achievements, but neither is any other species as suicidally prone to internecine conflict. We are the only species on the planet whose ingrained habit of conflict and perpetual warfare constitutes the chief threat to our own survival. In An End to Murder, the Wilsons assess whether human beings are in reality as cruel and violent as is generally believed. The book explores the possibility that humankind is on the verge of a fundamental change: that we are about to become truly civilized. Covering a wide-reaching history of violence from the first hominids to the twenty-first century, the book touches on key moments of change while also indicating where things have not changed since the Stone Age. It follows the history of violence from fifteenth-century baron Gilles de Rais (“Bluebeard”), the first known and possibly most prolific serial killer in history; to Victorian domestic murder, the invention of psychiatry, Sherlock Holmes, and the invention of forensic science; the fifteenth-century Taiping Rebellion in China, in which more than twenty million died; World Wars I and II; more recent genocides and instances of “ethnic cleansing”; and contemporary terrorism. As well as offering an overview of violence throughout our history, the authors explore the latest psychological, forensic, and social attempts to understand and curb modern human violence.
