This book collectively presents an array of topics from my life experiences as a girl growing up in the Midwest to becoming a mature older woman in the age of social media. As both illustrator and writer I enjoy presenting an image with a brief story or verse. Many years ago my parents asked me to design a Christmas card. This is where it all started. Hand-made Christmas cards expanded into other modern American holidays, such as Halloween. Halloween is a favorite of mine as it offers up so much eerily fun for the old and young alike. This is why this collection consists of youthful poems reminiscing of childhood experiences in family and holiday themes as well as poems catering to adults about desire, love, loss and other mature themes. Some poems were written prior to an illustration accompanying them while other illustrations were drawn first with a poem following. Some poems have no illustration at all for example, the poem, “The Hot Bartender” was inspired by viewing an iconic tv show and begs you to imagine what he looks like as I purposely did not include an illustration. This collection includes a passion that embodies a sense of style and fashion in the clothes design some characters wear. “Dressed in the finest silk, velvet and plaid, she’s a sight of breathtaking beauty and style”, is described in the poem, “Celtic Lass in Irish Couture”. Each one of us embodies our own sense of style. Reflections of style, life experiences and how I perceive the world around me can be found in this book. Wehali defines itself as the ritual centre of the island of Timor. As a ritual centre, Wehali continues to be the residence of a figure of traditional authority on whom, in the 18th century, the Dutch conferred the title of Kaiser (Keizer) and to whom the Portuguese gave the title of Emperor (Imperador). At one time, Wehali was the centre of a network of tributary states, which both the Dutch and Portuguese regarded as paramount to the political organisation of the island. This book is a study of Wehali in its contemporary setting as it continues to maintain its rituals and traditions. Significantly, Wehali is a ‘Female’ centre and its ‘Great Lord’ is considered to be a ‘Female’ lord. Whereas other Timorese societies are organised along male lines, in Wehali, all land, all property, all houses belong to women. Men are exchanged as husbands in marriage. Wehali is thus considered to be the ‘husband-giver’ to the surrounding realms on the island that look to its inner power as their source of life.

The first collection of short stories are deeply personal in nature, all located in Mumbai- its folds and seams- which the writer has explored all his life. Familial bond or the lack of them, an intimate dekko at a media group's machinations, a close study of the Irani community which is fast vanishing in the metropolis, the underworld and the staggeringly bold new world of sexual relationships sparked by websites are just some of the narratives, with a twist in the tale. KHALID MOHAMED started as reviewer and co-editor, during his teenage years for close-up, a film society magazine. He reviewed television for The Economic Times basides contributing articles to The Illustrated Weekly of India and Femina. His writing has writing has also featured in India Today,The Indian Express, The Telegraph, the international film weekly Variety and in Sunday Observer, London. He was film critic for Mid-day, Senior Editor of DNA newspaper, and National Culture Editor and film critic for Hindustan Times. Currently, he is Consulting Editor to the Deccan Chronicle media group. He wrote the original stories and screenplays and also directed the films Fiza, Tehzeeb and Silsilaay . He debuted recently as a playwright and director of the stageplay Kennedy Bridge. His documentary The Last Irani Chai has been screened widely. His second documentary Smiles and Tears on Mumbai's street children is under post-production. Presently, he is writing his second stageplay and his first novel.
