Synopsis Hungarian Hussar Sabre and Fokos Fencing by : Russ Mitchell

This is a heavily-illustrated, step-by-step guide for how to fence -- and how to teach! -- Hungarian sabre fencing, as well as how to use the "fokos," or long-handled axe traditional to Hungary and East-Central Europe. It covers everything from basic stance work and tactics to complete synoptic tables and how to troubleshoot students who are having difficulty with the material. The manual also provides translated comparative material in order to demonstrate how the lineage the author learned is -- and is not -- like other methods of fencing taught in Hungary and at the Wiener-Neustadt cadet school in the mid-to-late 19th century up through World War One.

Synopsis Sabre Fencing by : Russ Mitchell (Ed )

Where did Italo-Hungarian sabre fencing come from? It's not JUST Barbasetti...The Hungarians dominated Olympic sabre fencing for the majority of the 20th century. It is well-known that Radaelli's northern-Italian lineage became dominant in Austro-Hungarian fencing, under the immensely skilled tutelage of Barbasetti (and later, the Santellis). But little has been said about the Hungarian fencing-masters themselves and how they adapted the Radaellian sabre lineage to fit their own ideas. For the first time, the sabre fencing manual of Károly Leszák, primary sabre instructor at the prestigious Ludovica Military Academy, is made available in English. A must-read for historical fencers wishing to understand the evolution of Italo-Hungarian fencing, and for modern Olympic fencers curious where their methods come from.

Synopsis Modern Sabre Fencing by : Zbigniew Borysiuk

This book teaches the NEW saber! It has been more than 75 years since an English-language book devoted to saber last appeared. Those were the days of men-only, visually judged saber, and the US didn't stand a chance. Since then, saber has been revolutionized. The fencing was not just electronically scored the referees watched the slow-motion video replay to decide close calls. The world of saber has changed, and it needs this book! Modern Saber Fencing is the first book to explain and teach the new saber from the ground up. It illustrates the new techniques with over 75 photo illustrations. It shows the technical and tactical adjustments that transformed classical saber. It explains how to train for the new saber. PLUS it presents the scientific research that underlies the latest training methods.

Synopsis SMS Viribus Unitis by : Andrew Wilkie

Tegetthoff Class In 1907 the navy of the dualist, multinational Austro-Hungarian Empire placed an order for a new class of warships, whose design was based on the "all big gun" concept pioneered by HMS Dreadnought. Eventually four Tegetthoff class vessels were laid down, including the flagship Viribus Unitis, Tagetthoff, Prinz Eugen and Szent Istvan. The last warship of the class was not completed until well into World War I. The vessels' careers were not especially eventful. They spent most of their service lives as a "fleet in being" anchored in a well-protected port of Pola with only occasional trips to the Fazana Channel (well-screened by Brijuni Islands) for gunnery practice. During the war the ships were manned mainly by reservists, while the most promising and experienced members of their crews were detached to serve onboard submarines or torpedo boats, or assigned to land-based units. The second ship of the class ended her career in rather dramatic circumstances, which is why she perhaps deserves a more detailed treatment. Viribus Unitis The Battleship IV was laid down at San Marco on July 23, 1910 and launched on June 24, 1911. The Emperor's court used the occasion to organize a lavish celebration designed to carry a strong political message. The Emperor insisted that the battleship be given a rather unusual, Latin name Viribus Unitis (Strength in Unity - Emperor's personal motto).

Synopsis Swords and Swordsmen by : Mike Loades

Swords and Swordsmen chronicles the major developments in the sword's design, manufacture and use from Ancient Egypt to the American Civil War. Author Mike Loades traces the history of the sword in war and the evolution of the private duel. The book takes certain surviving swords as landmarks on this journey of discovery. Each can be linked to a specific individual, allowing each sword to be discussed in the social and military context of its time and forming the starting point for detours through other types of sword and contemporary developments in their design, manufacture and use. From Tutankhamun to General Custer, and including a chapter on the legendary samurai Uesugi Kenshin, this book charts the lives of warriors from many ages and cultures; men whose lives often depended on their skill with the sword. Illustrated with line drawings (many derived from old fight manuals) and dozens of photographs of surviving swords, Swords and Swordsmen celebrates these weapons as iconic works of art and powerful cultural symbols as well as examining the lethal practicality of their sue.
